Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

I just ordered a silicone mat to role out fondant.  I have never used one but would like some feedback.  Is is necessary to grease the mat or put a dusting of confectioners sugar?  Also, i've read that the fondant can be flipped over onto the cake directly from the mat.  I have a large square tiffany box cake to do this weekend and want it to be perfect.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Donna, I have an Ateca fondant mat that I just love. I don't apply shortening or PS when I've rolling fondant out for an entire cake. Sometimes I find that I need a little PS if I'm working with cutters or small pieces to keep it from stretching when I lift it off the mat. When I'm rolling fondant out for a cake covering I flip the mat over on the cake and peel it off from one end. Start slowly and you won't have any trouble.
I have a world cuisine mat and I would not work without it. I don't use any grease or ps. Have never used it to flip on fondant, but mine is really, really big.
It sounds like a pleasure to use! Deah, do you keep the mat slightly above the cake surface? Lately i've had a few experiences with elephant skin along he edges and fondant tears. I'm hoping the mat will help eliminate some of this.
I ordered the large ateco mat. I've heard all good things about silicone mats. I'm happy to hear no grease or ps is needed. Sometimes I think it helps create the dry spots.... Thanks!
I have a Ateco mat (24" x 36") and I also would not work without it. I do exactly what Deah does to cover my cakes. No grease or confectioner sugar/cornstarch. I use to do the rolling pin method...this is way way easier. So worth the cost.

I lay the mat directly on the cake and then peel it off. So much easier than transferring it by rolling pin or in my hands.
I also use the mat to lay over the cake and then peel it off slowly. So far it's worked really well for me, although, I must admit, I sometimes get my boyfriend to help me flip it onto the cake so we can do it slower and more evenly...

Thank you for sharing your expertise! I'm going to be using it this weekend. I think i'll do the same as you Deah and have my husband help me flip it. I'll let you all know how it goes!
I used to fight fondant and I'd use the inside roller from wrapping paper to try to roll the fondant onto the cake... a mess with powdered sugar and the pitts to clean up... then I bought my Ateco Mat... I have the large one and LOVE IT... so much that I have 2 of them (because I accidently cut a hole right smack in the center of the first one) so I use my new one for cakes and then I cut the other one into 2 pieces and I use it for gumpaste etc. I would NOT be without my mat. It is one piece of equipment I'd jump into a burning building for (well maybe not) but you are going to love it. I never use powdered sugar, corn starch or grease with it... just roll out your fondant flip and peel... just that easy! Clean up I use a clorox wipe to wipe both sides off with and let it air dry then roll it up and store it in the box it comes in. Enjoy your new toy!!!
I ordered the large one and should be getting it on Thursday. I have a cake this weekend that i've been fretting over. I feel so much better now - ah! LOL I'm covering a square for a tiffany cake. I did a test and had a problem with my fondant cracking on the edges so hopefully this will help with that. I have heard all great things about silicone mats. It seems like it really eliminates a lot of work, and stress about tears and elephant skin! Good to know about the clorox wipes. Thanks for all your expert advise!
I'm ordering one STAT. Thanks everyone.
