yeah i use the microwave,  i just put a teasoon of butter if i want to carve it,but i butter the container and put astrip of greaseproof paper under so i can loosen it ,but the cling film sounds a great idea, you don't need to crush it when it sets just carve the edges  to your shape

i do tend to shape it while it is still warm with butter hands then let it set in the fridge

Thanks for such quick replies.  I shall try the recipe tonight and let you know how I get on.  Feeling a bit apprehensive about the whole thing now - maybe a touch over ambitious!!!

I made some more last night  - and that was even softer!  Couldn't work out was I was doing wrong, so tried again this morning.  Got interrupted melting the marsh mallows and they started to stick and go hard, so .... I decided to try cooking them for longer than just melting (until they went stringy round the sides of the pan) and it seems to have worked!  In fact it may be a tad too hard now - shall have to carve them when they're still warm as they are more brittle now.

I guess this is why some people struggle to make nice soft normal RKT - they over cook the marsh mallow and get rock cakes instead!

Thanks for all your help everyone.

I made my son's Mickey Mouse Clubhouse cake using the rice crispy treats and no fondant.
It came out wonderfully!
I did cut the amount of butter on the box recipe in half, since others advised removing the butter, but I still wanted it to taste good.
Instead of using fondant (which I have no experience with), I just used the rice crispy treat molds (which I made the day before & refrigerated overnight), and did the icing stars all over the main parts of the clubhouse (red & black parts), then I frosted the glove, arm, foot & leg and drew on the clubhouse door & window trimmings.
I made most parts that stick up out of the rice crispy treats, including the windows. I made the base of the clubhouse out of a confetti dome cake. The molds were incredibly easy to do. This took less than 1hr to make the treats and form them. I did have to keep my hands wet with water for each mold, though. Once they harden in the fridge, they can be further detailed with a saraded knife.
For support of the vertical clubhouse, I couldn't find what I needed, so I improvised. I used a hard-plastic cup top, with a straw hole, then inserted a dowel. The dowel went through the dome cake, and the 'mickey head'.
The small parts I put together with toothpicks & wooden skewer. I found the best way to attach the ears was to put 1 long wooden skewer through 1 ear, then through the 'mickey head' part, then through the other ear, like an arrow through the side. Unfortunately, I discovered this after the ears fell off in the middle of the night after I attached them with toothpicks. I think the molds began to soften, as the cake would not fit in my fridge, and I'm sure the butter didn't help this.
I'll post pics soon.
How far ahead can you make RKT to mold? Two days ahead?
@ Denise: I made them 2 days in advance, and they tasted great. I wouldn't do it much further in advance than that, though. 2 or 3 days after the cake was made, they didn't taste too fresh, anymore.
I've only done them 2 days in advance.  I have this fear of things spoiling.  I finished my second airplane this weekend and they worked great for the wings and engines.   I made the wings the day before, covered them in a light coat of buttercream and then covered them in fondant.

Thanks!  I did make it two days in advance...worked fine...I think two days is a good number..

Hi Rosann,

How did you use the ready made rice krispie treats? Did you have to mix it with marshmallows or use it as is?

I read through all the replies quickly and did not see this suggestion.

In a pinch, I bought some ready made I found in the Supermarket...I think Walmart, but it might have been in Publix (Florida Chain). "Kelloggs Rice Krispies Treats, The Original" ....Comes in 2.6 oz block. (unfortunatlely I don't remember the price) BUT it worked fine for me to make the cap of my nurses cap on my UCF nurse cake. Molded very easily in my hands... So if you don't need a large quantity for a project, these would work find for small items. Just a thought.... Happy decorating everyone.

Hello,

I am hoping you guys can help me, I want to make Tinker bell's house to put on my daughters cake, I would like to molded out RKT (is only for decoration) so I was wondering how long in advance would i be able to make it?

should I use a mix of gumpaste/fondant? or just gumpaste?

My daughter's birthday is  on November 6, I am afraid I won't be able to get all the stuff done right before the "big day" and I can't let her down, she is really talking about her birth day every day, she is gonna be 3, but boy she has a big personality, I have never seen a kid her age being so involve on her party :)

Thanks aLOT

Since it is only for decoration, RKT or gumpaste/fondant will last a long time, so you can make it now.  :-)
