Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

I ice and decorate on some saran wrap .... sometimes it gets icing on it, so then when i go to deliver a cake i want to put it on something decorative, or at the very least a clean surface.
what do you all do ? move it somehow ?

my grandmother was a professional cake decorator, but i was little ... and i just sort of pick up what i remember. this is something i dont have any recollection of =-(

You can put the cake directly on the board or plate your serving it on and tuck wax paper underneath, but not too far, so you'll be able to pull it out. Remove it just before you do the bottom border. Cut several small pieces, not one piece, so it's just tucked underneath the edges all around the cake.
I ice and decorate on a cake board covered with the shiny side of freezer paper. Wipes up like a dream!
Last night I tried the wax paper thing but it got soggy and ripped...almost had a disaster with my brother's birthday cake....guess I will just go back to decorating on a plain cake board then transferring to a foiled board before doing the bottom border...freezer paper sounds like a good idea....

Soggy? What are you using for icing?
Tuck strips of wax paper under the cake, ice smooth, remove the waxopaper and continue decorating.
What's there to make it soggy? Icing should not be dripping wet. I just don't understand.

Yes, the same thing can be done w/fzr paper. Each strip of paper should be about 2" wide by 4-5" long
i agree Karen, the last cake i did, i actually used wax paper, and i noticed several hours later, i wouldnt say soggy but i noticed, im going to call them crisco rings ... because thats all i can think of that it was ..... they looked like oil spots. i used 50/50 butter/crisco buttercream .... so i figured it was the crisco that was causing that.

im going to try freezer paper on my next cake & see if thats better.
Trust Me (Ha! Haven't we all heard that!) you will like the freezer paper. Plus the roll is huge and you can do lots of cakes with one roll. Let me know how you like it.
Parchment paper works well, too.

Yes, but it is very expensive to use in this way. Wax paper does a great job. You don't leave it under the cake - pull it out once the cake is iced smooth - before decorating.
I think it was probably the cake that made it soggy. Was it still warm when you put the cake on it? I once had the same experience my wax paper was wet and ripped when I tried to pull it out but the cake was still warm when i put it on the paper so my guess was that it was the moisture from the warm cake.

I just cover my board with foil that I get from my cake supply store. I just wipe down the board before piping the bottom border. I don't have any rings or mess. It works for me.
Sorry Lynne but i have to say something, your coming across kind of harsh.
all of these ideas given to me are great, and i dont think there is a wrong way to do things, just prefered ways.
So i dont think there is any reason to be harsh about someones experiences with wax paper or the fact that they like to use parchment etc.

Ladies, thank you so much for all of your input and help, i have been to a few other sites and have experienced alot of unfriendly women, but not here.
and id like for that to continue.

Thanks again for all of the ideas and advice out there, you guys are wonderful =-)

O.k. - sorry if I came across as harsh to everyone.
I was just trying to point out some of the reasons one uses a certian product over another. Take all the info and process it for what YOUwant to use and why.
You are right there is no one way that is THE perfect way.
