Being new to the cake decorating community, I'm sure I'm just a bit over zealous, but I can't help it. I can hardly wait to get my hands in the middle of another project. I have several upcoming projects, but nothing for the next two weeks, so I decided to do some "organizing" of these upcoming events.
I've created drawings for all the cakes I know I have coming through June 2011. I've also started on the gum paste flowers (about 50 of them) for a cake I have in just 3 weeks. I am a one-woman show (for the time being) and am new to GP flowers. I figure it is going to take quite a while to create and paint all of them.
Last night, I created five of the flowers. I was so excited and pleased with them. This morning, I broke one.
Is this anything like two steps forward and one step back?
I don't mind. It's all a learning experience and FUN!!!
Happy Rolling "with" the Dough!

Several flowers have been completed. Several have been broken, too - all of which were my fault and carelessness. Otherwise, the flowers were beautiful.
I can promise you this, my middle name surely isn't Grace!
Welcome to the exciting world of cake decorating:)
What you are experencing is normal for a new decorator:)
Without knowing what flower and medium you are using it is hard to help you know how to prevent breakage. But, generally - yes one always makes several extra flowers to allow for breakage. In fact, any decor made with gp or fondant needs at least one back-up piece for mishaps.
Enjoy the beauty of creating! :)
