Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

I had my first travel "disaster" with a cake this past weekend, and I was delivering a very large and heavy wedding cake. For some reason, my brain didn't remind me to "glue" the bottom layer cake board to the cake drum. The cake slid right off the drum and was sitting cockeyed in the cargo area of my Explorer.

As for the construction damage, there was none. My brain did tell me to use extra reinforcements in this cake. It had both PVC & dowel rods in it. I did this because I was worried about the weight of this massive cake.

Thank goodness the cake was covered in fondant.  The only damage was to the borders, which was easily fixable since I had taken my Emergency Kit. I nearly walked out without taking my kit with me. I really glad I decided to go back in and get it.

Here's what I carry in my Emergency Kit:

Napkins/Paper towels

Cake spatulas

Tips - All of them

Decorator bags with icing

Extra decorator bag - in case of blowouts or color changes

Toothpicks

A baggie with cotton balls in water

Small paint brushes

Small 5-in-1 tool and pocket knife

Embellishment kit - pearls, wedding rings, luster dust, edible glitter, etc.

Small container vodka or gin

Hand sanitizer - I refill the bottle when I return.

Gumpaste tools - great for rolling/smoothing dents & dings in fondant and removing damaged buttercream

Anything pertinent to the cake!

Other items my brain will not conceive at this point...LOL!

So far, I've been rather lucky with this combination. Is there something you carry that you find invaluable to fix issues?  Is there something else I should carry?

Thank you for the extra tips June. I do also carry my camera. I make sure I set it to date & time stamp the final picture before I leave. That way, I can prove the cake was fine when I left it.

I also carry surgical gloves, small scissors.  Band aids/bactine.  That may sound funny, but I was applying thin black ribbon  around a cake, and had taken off my reading glasses. Yikes....I cut myself with the scissors, and blood squirted out.  Thank goodness I had paper towels in my hand, or I don't know what I would have done.  Blood splatter on a cake!!!!!  A total right off.

Headache meds.  I suffer from migraines & never know when one will strike.  I don't always bring my purse in with me, so they are in my kit.

A clean damp cloth in a zip lock bag.  Have been to venues where there is no sink/water. Hand sanitizer won't wipe off a cake board.   Of course xtra decorations in case.  Camera for pic's.

Just some ideas for you
