Any tips for applying fondant on a square cake?

Started this discussion. Last reply by jeri c Apr 29, 2010. 10 Replies

I've made two cakes so far using square pans.  And for the life of me, I can get the fondant right on the corners.  It just turns into an absolute wreck (shreds, breaks apart)  and I have to find a…Continue

When I dropped off the Hello Kitty and Super Mario cakes at the kids' birthday party at the bowling alley - all heads turned. Almost every person at the bowling alley (a popular kids birthday party location around here) came to have a look. The owner of the bowling alley asked me to make a castle cake that they could sell off of their website for the parties - they'd take a commission of course. I'm excited to try it. I'm not sure on pricing, or what the market will bear around here (we're…

I just talked to my niece. Her son's first birthday party is the 20th. She wants me to do a Finding Nemo cake for his party. I'm really excited to try it. Plan on doing a RKT fondant covered Nemo on the top, with all the other characters around the tiers. I can't wait to get started. I can start the gumpaste parts this weekend - I plan on doing some coral and shells. Will do the major characters out of fondant.

On another note - made a pink lemonade cake from scratch yesterday…

I've been in White Flower a couple of times just to admire their work! lol. Just being open for 3 years, they have accomplished so much! I looked up that class at viking, of course, it's the only day in May that I have something going on. My daughter's first birthday. A little more important, I guess, lol! I can't catch a break! I hope they repeat that class soon. What are you planning on doing for the steelers cake? I am going to do a browns cake for my husbands bday in june. Not sure what I'm doing though. Can't wait to see pics of your cake!

Nice to meet you! Where in NE ohio do you live? You have an excellent talent for cake decorating. Have you taken classes before? THANK YOU for the info on the gumpaste flower class at viking. You read my mind, I have been looking for a class on that exact skill! I know White Flower is having an advance class on April 17th, but I have a conflicting appointment. And, unfortunately, they are only doing that class once a year. So I am so thankful you gave me the heads up, I will have to investigate it further! Are you looking to make this a business venture or just a hobby? I would love to do wedding cakes eventually. Once my skills are to par. But, I want to keep it slow-paced, I'm not looking to be the next White Flower, lol. More like a hobby that I could make a buck or two every once in a while! How are you liking our crazy weather these past couple weeks? My sinuses/allergies are through the roof! Oh well, that's cleveland for ya :)

Ya, I hear you, my brother wants me to make a 40th b-day cake for his girlfriend. I tried to practice last night with royal icing. I was really good when I was doing it all the time but I have been out of practice for a bit and it was a ultimate fail. So, at that I am still looking for a design for it, the party is for May 1st so not much time left. Any ideas for that?
