I like your idea, Joann, of putting a picture of the cake on the table! :-)

As much as I like watching the cake shows (and I do watch them) to get ideas and maybe pick on a few techniques, sometimes I think people who don't cake decorate get the idea that these amazing cakes are "no big deal". Well, they are and if you want a cheap cake go to the grocery store and get one, or make it yourself. If you want something special with all sorts of requests then you should expect to pay for all the work, from design, to baking, frosting, fondant, piping, flowers, structural support to delivery! I don't even have a business and I'm already experiencing some of this in regards to people wanting/expecting me to just make a cake, but they don't offer to even pay for the materials. Its a good think I love cake decorating, because the people you have to deal with can test you at times.

You said it Terry!  I love making the cakes for family and friends birthdays etc.  I usually offer, so culpa mea.  But when I get asked, I kinda think it would be nice if they at least said - of course I'll pay your costs, but they don't because I'm a cheap way of getting a cake.  Then they go and show all their friends a picture of it and say ' this would have cost you a fortune from a professional'.  So their friends are then too scared to ask me because they think I will be expensive.  Well bang my head on a brick wall and call me stupid............

Hey Katy
My rule has always been.. You offer, no $$. If asked to make, you get $$. Doesn't matter if it is for family. Should be enough to at least cover expenses.

@ Melanie - brilliant piping - I am very impressed xxx Could you tell me if you first scribe the design on the fondant or do you just free hand the design?  Niceeeeee x

Mandy, first of all, thank-you! Second, I actually designed this entire cake, so its definitely a favorite. I actually drew a design on paper, then I free handed it on the cake using the drawn picture as my guide. Although it kills my wrists and hands, I find piping very relaxing. :)

I need to make gum paste sunflowers this week. Not sure how I want to do them?? Any sunflower experts? I'll take any advice you want to give :)

Melanie have you got a gerbera daisy cutter?  This does sunflowers too.  Or you can cut triangles of gumpaste the size you want (8 each of 2 sizes), then layer then round (and under) a round disc of gumpaste (which is your centre).  For the effect on the centre, press your gumpaste over a sieve to give it a pockmarked effect.
