anyone have any suggestions as to how to tier a buttercream cake? Why type of dowels do you use?

Is there some way to stack the cakes without ruining the buttercream from the below layer?

I use wooden dowels.  When I stack them I make sure there is a cake board underneath each layer.  When stacking put a cake board ontop of the first cake so you can mark where your dowels need to go then you would place four dowels in a square in the middle of where the board would be.  Then place the next cake directly on top of the dowels.  Repeat until there are no more cakes.  Then sharpen the end of a dowel with a pencil sharpener and put it all the way through all the cakes with a mallet or something similar. (in the very middle)

Hope this helps. :)

Thanks for those tips! also though, how do you prevent the buttercream from one tier not sticking to the next tier?

are you saying to make the tiers taller than the cake itself?

You can place a piece of wax paper under the cake board, in between the buttercream and the cake board.  That will prevent the buttercream from sticking to the tier.

thanks! I will try that, and it won't stick to the wax paper as much I'm assuming?
