I am so so very new to cake decorating but I want to make nice cakes for my girls so I am trying to learn to make the perfect cake for my daughters 16 birthday and well just for the girls. So, I am learning I have came across crumb coat a few times and I don't know what that is can some explain to me I read somewhere that you cover with piping gel? then I read awhile ago that piping gel is used for designs etc. I found piping gel at Wal mart but don't know what its for. I read that its clear and can add color. Can someone help me? Thank you guys,
Shana

Shana - crumb coating is when you put a layer of icing on the cake to "catch the crumbs". That way you put on your fondant, or put on your other layer of icing - no crumbs will mess up the design of the cake. I haven't heard about doing piping gel - but I know seedless jam works good as well! Especially apricot or seedless raspberry jam - you just heat it up and use it to "seal" in the crumbs. Hope that helps!

Thanks Faith! I have just learned something new! Thanks Shana for asking the question.

About this crumb coating - Faith, does the jam change the taste of the cake? Am just curious cause am not a really a jam person but I definitely need to use crumb coating :-)

I've never used the jam to crumb coat with but I do add a little extra milk to some buttercream to thin (not runny, just really easy to spread) it for my crumb coating! Just remember to let your cake "crust" for a few hours (I put mine in the fridge) before putting on the buttercream or fondant... that way it gives you an added firmness!

Shana, I have never heard of using piping gel to crumb coat a cake. I think Buddy (on Cake Boss) used the gel over the buttercream icing (or was it fondant??) when he made that stacked cake of all the planets, to make them look more real. I would think if you used it to crumb coat a cake it would take a LOT.

Thanks Jeannie I must have missed something along the way I have been reading so many things. I know everytime I go to Wal mart or Hobby Lobby I pick of the little jar of pipping gel wondering whats it for and If I need it. I looked it up last night and didn't really find anything just that we need it for designs but the pipping gel I found was clear and I am so confused I am just confusing myself writing this lol its been a long morning.
