I dislike fondant! tastes horrible. To me buttercream is the way to go Serious. I rahter do buttercream than fondant anyday of the week. Most of my cakes are buttercream.

I took Julie Bashore's class this weekend and she says she makes her fondant layer so thin that her customers don't know it's fondant. The sheeter allows her to get it to 1/32" thickness.

I did too before I started making it myself. I can only eat a small piece of it though.

i hardly use buttercream. i just use fondant and have ganache underneath it. i think buttercream is more used there in the US whereas here in OZ it's more fondant.

I wish I had a sheeter. They are so expensive. I have to roll by hand and it's so difficult to get so thin by hand. It's a workout! :)

Hi Everyone! am Rebecca from Kenya! I am just starting out in cake decorating. I have been making simple cakes for years by just throwing on some butter cream or glaze and sprinkles. I felt like more of a challenge this year and came across all these beautiful cakes on the net! I began to research on cake decorating and stumbled onto this forum. I am sooo encouraged by reading all your comments and looking at your pictures. If you are all self taught, then WOW! Am ready to go!! From comments in this forum..... I think I will start out with buttercream. We don't have Wilton classes here, so its all on me! Any good books, sites, DVDs that you could advice me to buy? I have seen some excellent videos on this forum which I will begin with.

So glad to have you join the club Rebecca! That's why I created this group to encourage decorators like yourself. Some of us are unable to take formal training and some may not be able to take a class. So were here to support one another and share information and resources to become the best we can be :).
