Amateur cake decorators

This is for cake decorators that are just starting off. I see a lot of professionals but I want to know about those that haven't got to that point yet. From the looks of my cakes I still have a long way to go. Can anyone relate.

This silcone fondant mat is so wonderful for a beginner cake decorator. I used it today and it made it so easy to cover a 10" x 10" x 5" inch square cake with fondant. I don't think I could have done…Continue

Hello, I'm a semi-newbie -- I'm on Course 3 of Wilton and going to take Fondant & Gum Paste in May. I'm glad I'm doing them now because my instructor says Wilton is reformatting the courses soon. I have a lot to learn and practice with my decorating and also am curious about maybe baking out of my home -- I understand there are health laws and things to know about and it varies by where you're located. Nice to find this site, I'm sure I'll enjoy it! :)

Hi all, really a newbi at this, but just love my new found passion. I am in Australia and doing my first cake decorating course in May...no Wilton courses in my state of NSW and the Planet cake courses are very expensive, so hoping the local community college course will be able to give me a few ideas. Plus, of course any tips from everyone here :)

Hey Cake Guys and Cake Gals, one of my other areas of interest is photography. Please click here to vote for me to win a one on one mentoring session with a great photographer. Thanks for your help!

Hi everyone! I am from near Toronto, Ontario (Canada). I just finished the Wilton course #2 and am excited to start course #3 on Wednesday! I'm looking forward to working with fondant! My friend is coming back to Canada from Switzerland August 2011 and has asked me to make her wedding cake! So, any tips and tricks are much appreciated!

Fondant is fun -- I didn't know what to expect but it wasn't all that difficult. Our instructor had us do a square cake first and said rounded ones will be easier. I even think the fondant is tasty; it's pretty sweet, kind of marshmallowy. This is the Wilton premade I'm referring to. I want to try some from scratch -- I have recipes. Maybe after my classes I'll get to experimenting.

Hi I'm from New Orleans, La. and I have been baking most of my life but have only been baking for out as we say here in N.O. for about 5 years. I still consider myself an amateur because of my poor decorating skills. I have some what solved this problem by casting decorations in white chocolate and placing them on the cakes. My main thing is cookies.

Hello, I am from Houston Texas. I began making cakes when my daughter turned one, and it just turned to an addiction from there.
