Amateur cake decorators

This is for cake decorators that are just starting off. I see a lot of professionals but I want to know about those that haven't got to that point yet. From the looks of my cakes I still have a long way to go. Can anyone relate.

Fondant Mat

This silcone fondant mat is so wonderful for a beginner cake decorator. I used it today and it made it so easy to cover a 10" x 10" x 5" inch square cake with fondant. I don't think I could have done…Continue

The classes are fun but I still practice at home too. There is so much to learn.

Hi, I've been baking for years but only started decorating about 18 months ago. I've done about 30 cakes so far, for friends and family. I'd love to take a course but they're few and far between in the UK so I'm just struggling by on my own!

I also just recently started decorating cakes, its so much fun I took the first wilton course and loved it, I would love to get better and start selling my cakes but at the moment i've been making cakes only for family and friends.

I've taken the first two Wilton courses, and I learned so much! I plan on taking #3 in March. I knew a little about decorating before the classes, but they really helped me to get jump started. I'd encourage you to do it! but you will invest more than just the book, kit and class. You do have to buy other stuff, so just keep that in mind.

So far I have taken all four of the courses that Wilton offers at Michael's in Canada. I really enjoyed it and found most of it very easy to follow. Now I feel confident in my decorating and I am startin to sell my cakes. Thanks and happy "caking".

Hi everyone.
To those who have taken the Wilton courses, good for you but you really also need to practice on your own. Julie is right in saying about investing more than just the book. Cake decorating is fun but it can be an expensive hobby. I almost admire those of you living in the US and UK. The stuff there seems so much cheaper than it is here. A course costing 150pounds in the UK costs thousands here. My husband paid almost RM 10 000 for the 3 Wilton courses, the full SK course and a course by visiting cake decorator, Peggy Porshen. I have to work hard to earn back that money.

Lily; whereabouts are you in UK? Im surprised that you cant find courses for you to take. Im always browsing on the net and I come across many places teaching cake decoration in the UK.

I have just finished a course on making fondant which is suitable for humid weather. Its just amazing... the fondant hardened withn a day ... without air conditioning.

I have taken numerous courses but is still learning, I believe that there is always something you can learn from ANYBODY.. beginner or professional. So have fun everyone.

I'm in the East - close enough to London that nobody bothers doing anything here but not close enough that I can easily travel there!

I want to do a nascar cake for my brother's birthday. I don't have a car pan. Any thoughts on how I should build a car out of cake? Thanks.

You could do a sheet cake, stack them then cut an outline out of a nascar so that you will have something to follow and go from there. I hope it helps.
