Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Hi everyone!  I'm relatively new to the group, and I have a question I'm hoping to get some input on.  An aquaintance of mine has asked me to make a 2 tier Princess and the Frog cake for her 3 yr old.  The bottom tier would have fondant flowers (the kind you could make with a cutter), and the top would be quilted fondant with a plastic crown on top, and a sculpted frog with a crown on it's head. It needs to feed 35-40 people.  I generally give my cakes as gifts, or trade a cake for babysitting with my friends, but she asked what I'd charge.  I don't really know her, so I feel I should charge her more than just cost, but I have no idea what to charge! I researched local bakeries, and for a sheet cake of that size, they start around $65-70, with custom cakes of course costing more.  I don't know if I could ask for that with a straight face.  lol  Thoughts?

For family and some friends as well as local non profit organizations, I do cakes for free or for reimbursement of expenses. For those I charge a low price to cover my time, I double my expense. (don't forget to add in dowels, and boards and what else we take for granted because we already have it in the house..these items add up). Then after that make a standard cost per serving that will be a start and from there you can add on for any extras. above all, price according to ur skill or no one will take u serious.

You'll do it with a straight face by the time you're done with all the work.  :O)

What works for me is keeping track of costs, and then estimating my time.  I work for $6/hr right now.  My ingredients are marked up in the spreadsheet I use by 20%, so if the vanilla I use will cost 6 cents, I charge 7 cents.  It's really saved me, because I usually forget to charge for things like cake boards or liners or a random spool of ribbon will make it into decorating at the last second.  Any way... time + materials.  There are a lot of good articles out there on pricing... like this one:

Have fun, but reap the rewards for your talent, time, and energy!

Thanks Rhonda Goodwin

I would be interested in a copy of the spreadsheet as well, please .

I have more trouble pricing than anything else.  It seems its all over the place.  I know a lady in TX that does everything at $1.00 per serving .. another that does $2.50 bc and $3.50 f and elements separately.  I have no idea when I price honestly.   Anything that can help is greatly appreciated.
