Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

I'll be making my girls' kindergarten graduation cake and wanted to add the graduation cap on top of the full slab cake.  I'm pretty confident on making the base but its the square part on top that I am unsure of.  How can I make it so its stiff and won't fall down at the edges that arent supported by the base?  Do I use fondant or gumpaste?  Should I just line a square piece of cardboard with fondant?

ANy help would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

You would definitely be better off making the entire thing out of gum paste. Make it a few days in advance and it will be nice and hard.
You can also add tylose powder to your fondant to make it harden like gum paste. I do this all the time for bows. I also use a food dehydrator when I'm in a pinch for drying time.
Can I find the tylose powder at Michael's?
Making it ahead of time actually will work out great as the graduation is on a friday and I work fulltime.
Thanks so much for your help!
Michaels has gum tex, which is used to make gum paste.

I've bought the actual package of gampaste at Michael's. Should I still add the powder?

I just made a grad cap last week. Covered rice crispies for the base and cut a square out of fondant w/ gumtex added. Let dry about 3 days and had no problems, and Im in Florida and its hot!! Nothin drooped or melted :D Good luck hope this helps

That's beautiful, Michelle! I am hoping to use a round cake for the cap as its a large cake....might have to resort to rc though!

Thanks for posting!

I made one last year and am making more of them this year.. I used a rubber ball and cut it in half for the base and covered it with fondant then covered cardboard with fondant for the mortar board.... not edible but looked great. It's in my album. It was just a cake topper though might not be what you are looking for. Super easy. I just attached it by folding a piece of wire in a U shape and poking it through the top into the ball then attached the button and tassle on top to cover it up.
