And don't photograph your cakes while in the refrigerator. Actually, we should post a page with tips for photographing photos.

I know... I am always taking a picture of my cake right after I do them on the table with my phone and post them ... and I have all kind of junk in the background, tools, boxes, extra stuff .... and some of them that is the only picture I have because someone has gone off with it.  I try to put them on my coffee table ... but I get the sofa, the tv, or some other thing in the background.  I need to find a better backdrop!!!!

 

I did read somewhere you should take them in natural light, but most of the time I am finishing them at midnight!!!!  I need to find the best pictures of my cakes and maybe do some croping or fading on one of those fancy programs...........

I completely agree, having a good backdrop, white box is great for pictures.  You dont need to spend a lot of $$....for starters all you need is 4 pieces of white foam board.  3 for the sides, and one to put the cake one, and VIOLA...and some decent lighting of course :)

My floors are mopped before I do a cake and after... just the anal cleaning bug I am... but I have noticed this too and it always makes my stomach jump just a bit when I see less than clean conditions behind a nice cake.  Have wanted to say something... so Thank You JJ for stepping up!!!

When I photograph my cakes I always take a minute and clean off the decorating table, throw a table cloth over it and then take the pics.  I almost never get the lighting just right but daylight is best I believe.  Then I always take more pics after I deliver it if I can.

You hit the nose on the head! There is nothing that spoils a great cake than to see the morning dirty dishes sitting right beside the cake, or all of the appliances on the counter. Putting as much thought into taking that monumental picture is equally as important as the masterpiece you just created. Getting a cheap three sided folded cardboard from your local craft store, (the kind I use for airbrushing) makes an excellent backdrop that you can drape fabric over. Keep your eyes open for soft fabric that will fall into a soft drape. You only need a yard. I look over in the formal section of my fabric store and stay away from things that are stiff or too see through. If I can pick it up and crush it in my hands and it still looks soft and smooth, then that one will be a winner.  This is a good topic.

Hi Gretchen, if you are using an iPhone to take your pictures there is a great app called 'Camera+' I think the standard version is free and it let's you crop, lighten and add borders which I've found really useful. I'm just about to make myself a light box, think it will pay me to take better pictures. I've had some taken professionally - but it eats into my profits! Tx

Oh JJ......You make me laugh!!!!!   From a former Extreme clean freak, I can honestly say....I never noticed.  You have too much ime on your hands honey.  I must say I do notice cluttter, dirty dishes & the like.  It is a good idea to create a nice backdrop for your pics.  Sometimes tho, it isn't always possible.  I set up my last cake, an engagement cake, on the best table they could give me at a Bar. This is where the party  was being held. Crummy lighting, dark.  But I couldn't set up the cake with the gumpsate ring box, flowers etc. until I got to the venue. So sometimes bad background  & lighting just can't be avoided. Anyway JJ, I gotta say, took guts to point that stuff out.    :)

I just read through this thread (a bit late) and found it so funny.. and so very honest.   I am new to the group and the things mentioned here are the exact thing I notice in the pictures right away.  I notice the counter tops with  clutter, etc.  I guess its always best to really look at the picture you are posting and make sure you have cropped out any undesirable elements before uploading.  Even better still is to remove the undesirable elements BEFORE you start baking and/or decorating. I also wanted to say that I am loving this website and that everyone's work is amazing!!  Truly art.

Haha! I had forgotten about this thread, but after your post, Michele, I reread through it and laughed all over again. Especially the one that Theresa had posted about taking pics in the frig. I've never actually seen any pics of cakes in the frig, but can imagine seeing the mustard, milk carton, left overs, all sitting next to that beautiful cake. What a sight!
