Does anyone have any great tips for getting fondant RED. I made a batch yesterday and used a combined total of probably one whole jar of wilton coloring with different shades, Red red, Christmas red, and Red. To me it still has a pink hue to it. Help!!!! I have 2 cakes due in 2 weeks that both need red. :\

I made red at christmas time...but it was a deep red, could never get a crimson or lighter shade of red...what i did to get mine deep was add burgundy to it. You can see the color on the santa claus cake in my gallery and on the poinsettia flower in my gumpaste gallery. Someone gave me some advice once.....sometimes you just have to buy it.!!!! so far I havn't but then I avoid red if I can :D.
I'm a fellow red hater too. LOL I stopped using the wilton paste color in red (still use most of the other colors). I switched to Cake Craft Super Chinese Red. The "super" versions of their color hold more pigment per part so you don't have to use quite as much to get a vivid color. Also, the longer it sits the more vivid the color will become. I work with marshmallow fondant almost exclusively and red actually changes the texture of it :(. Good luck!
In my race track cake I added a little black to get a somewhat of a deep red (dark) red...was scared doing it but hey I pulled it off...

Will take Sherry's advise about adding burgundy....when I started mixing I was like O lord please let this work...it seemed a little off initially but as I mixed it, it blended well.

I gave up and bought the Satin Ice red. I like it - it doesn't have that "red" taste. It was worth it to me not to have to knead my poor hands off trying to get true red. :)
Where do you get yours from? I found it on GSA for 16.99 for a 5lb tub, but the shipping is over $14 so total order is around $31 for me. I did see that Duff has some at Michael's for 19.99 for 2lbs and I guess I could use a 40% off coupon, haven't heard how it tastes though....

When I use Red coloring, I use AmeriColor. I HATE Wilton's Red's. When I'm out of AmeriColor, I turn to Magic Line. We carry it in Red, Black, Brown and Emerald Green at the shop that I work part time at. Both of these brands have wonderful color.
Holly... Since you are on the West Coast... you can get Satin Ice from the Ultimate Baker in Spokane WA. They are great to work with and shipping is not as bad as it is from the East Coast! If they let you use the 40% off coupons at Michaels... get the stuff from Duff and try it... that is a good price. That will bring it cheaper than ordering it... the shipping kills ya! I just have to get my white, ivory and dk chocolate in the 20lb buckets because I use so much of it.
Use powdered food color and it wont make your fondant sticky. You can get it at www.fondantsource.com I get most of my supplies there..great prices.
Believe it or not, I get the bright red for my Mario cake mushrooms out of the McCormick bottles in the cake section of walmart. Fondant gets a little sticky...but it let it rest and it's just fine.
