One of the things we'd like to do here at CakesWeBake.com is help everyone to save money on the cake decorating products they buy. As a group, we'll have more buying power than purchasing as an individual and be able to save more money. One thing that we are looking into is getting fondant. How much fondant do you go through in a month? For those of you who do buy a lot of fondant, how much does it cost you?
I just started buying fondant. I don't want to push any certain vendor on this site, but the stuff I buy tastes pretty good. I'll be happy to give you the name of the sales rep if you want it (off line). The tub I bought was 13# and was about $50. First quarter I was pretty busy. For family birthdays only: I have a cake this week, then one mid-May, one in June, two in July, one in Sep, then it gets quiet again until Nov-Dec, when I have 5 all in the same couple of week period. That's assuming I don't start selling them or creating cakes for Labor Day and Arbor Day and all the fun random holidays that fall during the year.
I buy my fondant in 20 pound buckets and go through about 4 or 5 a year. Usually 1 dk chocolate, 2 ivory and 2 white. I only use Satin Ice and usually purchase mine from the Ultimate Baker in Tacoma Wa because they are West Coast and the shipping kills me from the East Coast... I usually buy my fondant and my boxes, boards etc from them. If you are East Coast, I don't think you can beat Global Sugar Arts prices from what I have found. GSA is $46.99 for 20 lbs... UB is $59 for 20 lbs.
I am looking forward to ordering some of the pastel Satin Ice colors they look awesome!
I buy Fondant thru "CakeSupplies4u". Their 20-lb bucket is $45.99 and they offer Satin Ice as well as Fonderific, in a large variety of colors. I've noticed that men vs. women love the taste of fondant so my clientele from the men's side is starting to grow and they are getting the word out to their partners/wives/friends, etc. I am only starting out and testing the waters as I do want to open up my own shop. In the meantime, as a single mother of two teens, pricing is a big deal so I try to look for the best deals out there.
DON'T SHOOT ME, LOL......right now I only buy what I can get from Michael's or Hobby Lobby with a coupon. I'm still MOSTLY using fondant for accents & if I'm the one cutting the cake, I just disassemble it & remove the fondant before I cut it. The ladybug cake that I done, I added Lorann oil to & it tasted SO MUCH BETTER---Heehee. I'd love to be able to afford to try different fondants :) so I'll keep an eye on the discussion.
Tara... been there done that! When I first started using fondant I had never heard of anything but Wilton.... I've come a long way and you will too! I even found that Wal Mart had Wilton fondant cheaper than Michael's! But... on a nother note, since I have started using Satin Ice, I do not use as much fondant. It just rolls out nicer and stretches better than the Wilton and goes farther in my opinion! Hang in there... we all have to start somewhere! I live in a very rural area and even Michael's is an hour one way away from here so I shop on line as much as I can. There is so much out there on line!
Does anyone use mmf. I'm going to make myself a birthday cake (I know somebody should be buying me one) anyway I wanted to make my own purse cake to experiment if i could actually pull this off. I'm not really good at using fondant but I liked the taste of it better than wiltons.
Just checked them all once again to compare... since I live in the middle of nowhere it always costs me more for shipping... so a 20lb bucket at The Ultimate Baker is $59 a bucket now... shipping to here is $16 so $75 totoal... From Cake Supplies 4U where Diana gets hers... $45 a bucket but the shipping from there to here... $30 so again... $75... and my favorite place to order everything is GSA.... $46.99 a bucket and $33 for shipping... $79.99.... so they are all close. I think it just depends on where you live!
