I think my only thought would be to do something "outside the box" - there will probably be a lot of soccer balls and golf courses.  What are the criteria?  Is there a height requirement? Or any other requirements? Is this a live competition where you have to create the cake on site? Or do you make it and bring it?

What is it about the theme of sports that puts it soooooooo out of your comfort zone?

As the other poster asked what are the requirements - size limitations - or other things that will effect the creation?   Is this contest also for taste?  Does the cake have to be real cake or can dummys be used?

I did a sports cake contest not too long ago. Maybe the entries would spark some ideas for you. They can be found here: http://www.cake-decorating-corner.com/sports-cakes.html

I'll look up the size stuff when i'm more awake, but no not tate jsut decorations.

and whats out of my comfrot zone?  I"m about as sporty as a lump of jell-o.  I know what sport is, but i don't play and i don't watch, i actually can't think of anything more boring than whatching a sporting game.  which means it provides little to no inspiration for me.  But i still wanna try.
