Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Having a blonde moment here, but do people really eat fondant or does it generally get left on the plate. I've tried several recipes and flavorings and it still is not as tasty as the decorations are beautiful.

To be absolutely blunt, I hate fondant!!! Marshmallow fondant isn't bad, though.
Thank You! I thought I was loosing my mind. Although it is versatile and makes gorgous cakes.

yes Sherry I think its the texture also kinda like stale taffy, guess I could just pratice more with the buttercream, it was used for a long time before fondant . Its a lot more piping technique. Thanks

Fondant is SWEEEEEET...sometimes toothachingly sweet. I hate marshmallows as a rule...but I like marshmallow fondant. I add up to a tablespoon of diluted saltwater sometimes to my batch of mmf, that helps to cut the sweetness some. For me its not so much about the taste as the texture..usually pretty chewy. As an interesting side note I saw these articles recently

Buttercream may be on its way back in.

I too think fondant is way too sweet for my liking, tho you can do so many things with it. My boy's like it, especially the chocolate fondant. I don't mind home made vanilla butter cream.
My understanding is if you use the Lorann oils to flavor fondant it should tast pretty good. They are very concentrated and don't need too much to achieve flavor. I have also tasted Satin Ice and Fonduxrific and they tast DELISH!!!
I love MMF as well, and Rolled Butter Cream fondant, never made regular fondant but I have tasted it and GROSS!!! I have been told alot of cake decorators use regular fondant on a Dummy cake, for the elaborate cake, that's the one that everyone at the reception see's and they have what they call kitchen cakes ( sheet Cakes) that they cut and serve to the guest. They will usually have a tiered cake for the bride and groom to cut. I love this website I come here everyday..........=-)
I like to add almond flavoring to my marshmallow fondant, however some eat it some don't. I am not sure if I am doing it in vein. My neighbor loves my almond fondant, so i go with that.
I think spending more time on the butter cream is worth it, as if the fondant gets taken off the underneath is delicious!

Hi,

You have to be careful when adding any nut based ingredient to a cake, especially to a Wedding Cake, of the 100 guests I can guarentee that at least a couple are alergic to nuts. The last thing that you want to do is send someone to the Hospital.

Wilton fondant is not that good at all, but I have purchased samples of fondant and have found that Satin Ice and Fonderific have the best tasting fondant. Satin Ice has different colors and they are all vanilla flavored. Fonderific has a chocolate fondant that tastes like tootsie roll!!!! Isn't that the best......ok....I m happy about that. They also have other flavors to match the colors....pink is strawberry, lemon is yellow, they have tutti frutti and white buttercream flavored fondant.

www.cakesupplies4u.com - this is where I ordered the sample fondant from, you taste a small piece of it and keep some on hand for color purposes.

Maridsa.
I make my fondant (not MMF) and flavor it to match the cake. Always add butter flavoring but I've made Almond, Pina Colada, Vanilla, Chocolate. A good generic is vanilla.
