Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Hi all, I know that if you add a tad bit of oil to the gold or silver powder, you can paint them on a cake.
If a client wants the whole tier gold, how do I do that? The gold or silver does not work in to your icing.

Thanks

This is perfect timing because I was just watching a YouTube video that shows what I think you are asking about.  Please be patient because what you want to learn is at approximately the 2.30 minute mark of the video.  I liked the video completely and I hope I will be able to give you some help.

You need to mix it with alcohol not oil.  And be sure that you get the gold and silver that is edible if you are covering an entire layer.  There are some of the metallics that are not recommended for eating.
Vodka or vanilla extract will work, I prefer a vodka with the highest content of alcohol, because it dries very fast!! :-)
vodka definetly works best, the alcohol evaporates so don't worry about it,i use it to paint the stripes on my red black and silver cake, the lustre sprays are very good you can get them in lots of colours good luck x

Painting the whole tier gold is alot of work.  This is where airbrushing comes in. You may not have one so the next best thing is to get the luster sprays made for cake decorating. Here is a link to what I am talking about

It will give you better coverage than using dust and alcohol. Or you can paint with  airbrush paint directly from the bottle. Make sure you shake very well and use a natural soft bristle brush like sable. Dust and alcohol will be too streaky for a whole tier.

I agree Karen.... the airbrushing gives a nicer finish.. I don't have an airbrush so can't add anthing to that!

You could always buy a spray can or two of food colour. I know have tried the pearl luster spray and it looked amazing. Haven't seen the gold one demonstrated. PME and chefmaster both have gold luster sprays.
