Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

My name is Nadia, and I'm a 32-yr-old business owner in Ontario, Canada. I've just finished Course #1 (intro) of the Wilton Cake Decorating 4-course series, which was held at my local Michael's store. I decided to join the course because I was itching to do something artsy (my business is education-related) and have been watching way too much Cake Boss and Ultimate Cake Off! Since I'm one of those people who looks at stuff and immediately thinks that "I can do that!", I thought I'd put myself to the test, lol!

Well, I think I did pretty well for my first attempt at decorating, baking cakes, and making icing! NOt great or exceptional, but OK. The icing tasted good- although stiff, medium or thin consistency still boggles my mind a bit- and the cake was baked all the way through, so I consider that a small success! People actually ATE all the cakes without complaining of sickness or leaving leftovers on their plate....hmmm, maybe I just have REALLY nice friends?!

Anyhoo, I've just started Course #2 (flowers and boarders). Rosebuds will NOT be appearing on any of my cakes anytime soon, let me tell you! But, I'm having fun, which is all that matters!

I'm very excited about trying fondant/gumpaste! I think that's course 3 & 4, so I'll be starting that in May!! Thanks for all of your encouragement. I definitely think this could be a sweet addiction ;o)

Welcome to the addiction (lol) Dia.

Wait until you try Gumpaste/fondant if you haven't already. You might find yourself in the kitchen all day. I have been doing cakes off and on for years (these pass 3-4 more onthan off). But thw last few years I started to get into gumpaste and fondant flowers/trims/animals and yes, I'm now addicted like never before :)

I am about to start Course 2 and I also live in Ontario. Toronto to be exact. I got into this world after baking cakes for my kids daycare parties. Realized how much fun I had :) I am really looking forward to Course 2 starting on Saturday! Can't wait to see your pictures!!

Just keep working at it and lots of practice. I took all of the Wilton classes and I still have to practice my frosting roses. Now gumpaste or fondant or choclate clay(candy clay) roses I happen to like making them better.

Dia, you're off to a great start. Don't be so critical of yourself. Everyone is always so worried about their cakes when they're beginning. Trust me, I've seen some scary beginner cakes and you have nothing to worry about. Just keep practicing and you'll get better and better.
