I am so glad I am doing a practice run of my purse cake. I am following a video tutorial (using my own pattern), and that doesn't seem to be the problem. I used my chocolate cake recipe and have…Continue

I want everybody's thoughts on what their favorite fondant is and why. I have done Satin Ice, Duff, and I recently saw a video on utube which adds Wilton to MMF. Just want to hear some opinions. …Continue
Aronna - I used to be a corporate travel manager in my career days and came across some unusual requests. But never a question about gum paste flowers lol. Domestically within the US, I can't imagine there would be any issue. Somewhere like into Australia yes, as they have very strict Food and Hygiene Laws, possibly Internationally into the US also an issue, but not domestic. Your best bet would be to call the airline with whom you would be travelling and check their baggage restrictions. As June says, hand baggage, easily accessible and advise your airline prior to travelling what you are carrying. I have a good friend in the travel business in Atlanta, so I will ask him if he knows and see what he says.
Well Sandra
You only have another, what, 15-20 years to go..... hee hee....... :o)
I am reading some of the comments on here about all nighters when you have so many cakes for a weekend. How do you schedule your time when you have this many?
That's a good question Ruth. There are several here that have lots of support & help from their husbands. But still.... guessing the late nights are a must when you work full time. When I worked, and made my cakes, I had fridays off. Otherwise, I don't think I could have managed.
Dear Ruth, like June mentioned-my husband is my partner and he helps me a lot with cake duty and also with fixing dinner, there is a plus. I am also very organized, so I have a weekly time sheet and there I write down the cakes that I will be baking, torting, filling, crumbcoating, applying fondant and decorating. Then I know for sure that I will be able to accomplish every task.
I should say my hubby helped in many ways, still does. When I was up to my eyeballs in icing, he would make dinner, help tidy up my mess, etc. Big help with delivery & set up. But I could never had done what Sandra accomplishes every wknd. For sure you have to be organized.
For me, I won't lie, I'm a procrastinator! I really don't want to be a full time decorator, but sometimes my orders demand me to be. My typical schedule is Mondays-I'm basically off, but I use this day to get back with people or to have wedding consultations. Tuesdays-groceries, and getting supplies. Wednesdays I bake, make fondant, and make buttercream and fillings. Thursday- get my boards ready and start to decorate. Friday decorate. Saturday- cakes go out and I decorate. My problem right now though is my 4 year old. When its just me and him during the day, I don't get much done. My shop is in my garage, and when I'm out there, he wants to be inside destroying something. So I typically wait until either my assistant gets here, or my hubby is home from work. My oldest son just had his first baseball game last night, which once again throws things off because I hate to miss any game. All of that leads to quite a few Friday night all nighters.
Sports. This is one of the reasons I never had a cake business on wknds. My son played both Rep hockey & Lacrosse. Lots & lots.... and LOTS of practices, games & travel almost every other wknd. Summer & Winter. I was also on the Lacrosse board for 6 yrs... big commitment. And my daughter was in soccer, house leauge and select... also wknd away games!!!!!
Oh Melanie....maybe we can form a procrastinators club! I am so bad...there always seems to be something else I 'need' to do. OK, so maybe I don't 'need' to do something else all the time but I can't get my butt into baking mode when I need too. I should be putting something into the oven right now but I'm on here instead!! Shopped last night, so at least that's done. Have one order Friday and four for Saturday (which technically need to be done Friday because I have a baby shower Saturday morning to go to - who does baby showers in the morning anyway??!!)...oh, yeah, and a cake pop order tomorrow....that's what needs to be in the oven now.....but here I am.....typing away.....shame on me!!
