Have you got some cardboard (old delivery boxes or even better a box that had wine delivered in it with corrugated separators). If so you could make shelves with it . So, one layer of cupcakes, cardboard shelf with long sides that stands over that layer, then another layer of cakes and so on. Does that make sense?
I have plastic cupcake/cake transporters I got from Costco over the years. But before I had enough of these I used foil roaster pans. They are cheap, deep and the ones I found had slanted sides that fit into each other with enough gap that they didn't harm the lower layers. I stacked about 4 of them successfully. You may have to push the sides out a little to get the right height if you have a high frosting, but the foil is flexible and strong.
Firstly Melanie
Are they covered in fondant or buttercream? I transported 100, had to "touch up" some on set up, but since then would do it differently. If they are iced in BC, I would freeze all of them, and pack them frozen for dilivery. I have a large plastic Rubbermaid under the bed storage container. Think that will take probably 40-50 cupcakes. The trick is to put rubber non skid mat on the bottom of the container and pack your cupcakes close together so they won't move. Now you could use cardboard boxes, but then you couldn't stack them. My back seat folds down to give me lots of storage space in my trunk. Place rubber matting on the trunk floor & put your containers on that. They won't slide or shift. I transport my cakes this way, they never move. If I stacked the containers, put the rubber matting in between the containers so one doesn't slide off the other. Take old towels or pillows to go between the containers & side of the trunk, so they are packed tight & can't shift. With the rubber matting between, that probably won't happen.
By the time you get to the venue, the cupcakes will be beginning to thaw out, or maybe completely thawed. You will just have to be careful removing & setting up. I always had extra icing as I said to fix any accidents.
Hope this helps. :0)
