Oh Ladies, I am so excited! My "Mat" just arrived! I for one can not wait to try it.

Comment by Danielle Dyskin on September 13, 2012 at 4:57am

The Mat is a simple idea - it has absolutely changed the way we do cakes and I wouldn't be able to cover large cakes so easily without it (or perhaps not do it at all).  However, despite just being clear plastic it was very expensive here in Australia.  We bought ours a year or so ago and it has warped and stretched a little from all the use so it doesn't work as well as it used to.  I will definitely be looking for food grade plastic to make my own in future and will make a few sizes.  I didn't mind paying that much the first time (because I think the inventor should make some money for such a good idea) but I can't keep paying that much for two sheets of plastic.

Hi Danielle, you brought a very good point I never thought of before, how long does "The Mat" last?

Anyone who has one of these could you let the rest of us know how long it lasts, just a rough estimate, thanks.

I roll my fondant on Quilon Coated Baking Sheets made by the Brown Paper Goods Company of Waukegan, IL. Buy them at the GFS store, just over $3 for a box of 50. They are about 17 X 25, and dusted with just a bit of constarch the fondant rolls out great...will have to try no cornstarch and see if I can transfer with it. Usually roll onto a length of PVC. The sheets are awesome to line pans and bake cookies on, too. Just like parchment paper, but soooooo much less expensive!!

If I'm covering a huge cake, I just tape 2 together. Love this stuff!

I can't find the message that Jean Moore posted asking for advice on Spiderman cake - but was going to suggest that you just use normal coloured buttercream to colour in your cake - in truth kiddies do prefer normal buttercream or the 7 1/2 minute frosting coloured - quite an easy shape would be to take a normal beerbox cake (that's probably a sheet cake in your neck of the woods) cut out the "silhouette" of spiderman and the bits that you cut off you mix with some buttercream and build up his face and maybe a bit of definition around his muscles, and then cover in buttercream and use ribbons of fondant to make his web face etc. - good luck :-)

I've been using the mat for two years now and love it.  The mat last forever, so far.

Okay, so I had a fight this weekend with Spiderman.  He literally tried to kick my butt, but I am one tough cookie and won the fight, Here is the result of the battle.:)spiderman%20007.JPG
