I'm in the kitchen now decorating a cake for my niece who just turned 21 a few days ago. Butter cream icing, fondant accents, purple and green are her favorite colors. I think it going to be an art and fashion inspired cake, something you unique like her. It's funny.....most of the time I don't know what I'm going until I prep the cake.

Last October I was watching one of the cake shows...and said out loud to my husband...I could do THAT...his response was I KNOW you could, so I invested in some cake toys, but because I live in a rural area and the nearest class is 90 miles away..I just watched video after video on you tube and joined groups like CWB to get my questions answered...Fondant is my thang and I struggle with buttercream..but I adore cake decorating, it is the first time in my 21 (ok ok 48) years that I have ever felt artistic.

I know exactly what you mean Sherry. It's only been 2yrs. for me and I love the flexibility and forgiveness of fondant. I'm not too bad with butter cream except when it comes to doing roses.

Daisy, I have some days like that, at the last minute, just before I start to frost I'll quick get out some books and see if something will inspire me :D

I can't do roses either Daisy (at least not to my liking) and at first I sooooo wanted to master them, I just don't get the consistency thing...and yes I have watched Serious' video on consistency over and over...so I put the buttercream roses on the backburner while I concentrated on other things, but whenever I have some left over icing, I give rose, "the old college try"...one day

Bah, roses schmoses! I think there are things we all obsess about as cakers but roses seem to be number one. The way I see it is this, the ability to make a rose does not make someone a great cake decorator. Look at all the cakes in a grocery store! Every single one just about has a rose on it. But how many of those cakes look like OURS? I have a friend who couldn't do a rose but could pipe a rooster freehand, how awesome is that? I have yet to make a cake that doesn't have a 'lip' around the top edge. I used to obsess about that, so much to the point where I felt like I wasn't a good caker because I couldn't conquer it! I read Dede Wilson's book 'Wedding Cakes You Can Make' and that made me realize that the imperfections were what made it MINE. It's ok for the cake not to be perfect, it's ok not to be able to conquer a technique. Focus on the amazing things you CAN do :D
*steps off...not a soap box, how about a Crisco can?*

Serious cake thank you, thank you for the statement about th roses. There are so many thing's I'm good at and I should not beat myself up about doing bc roses. Denise those are my favorite customers too. I do my best work when they give me creative freedom :).

OK if I join in? I took Wilton classes but I'm sure I'll be self-teaching myself many things as well that weren't covered there...
