Hi everyone - I'm Katy and I live in the UK. I have been making novelty cakes for family and friends for a few years now - inspired by my mother who was a wonderful artist and baker. When she got too old to be able to make the cakes and then passed away, I realised there was no-one left in the family to produce the wonderful, personal birthday cakes that we were privileged to have as kids. So I knew I had to take the job over so that my stepkids and my grandchildren would have the memories that I have. So far, so good. This is a great site and I have made so many friends and have learnt so much from everyone. So thank you.
Hi everyone I have been baking since I was 9 years old. I started decorating cakes for my kids birthdays in 1996. But it has only been within the past year that I have really started to expand my knowledge & learn decorating techniques beyond seashell boarders and adding figurines to cakes.
He everyone, I have been asked to make a pineapple upside down cake for my cleaning lady's birthday this weekend. Her son contacted me and said the theme is a luau and she loves PUDC. I have been making these for years so it isn't the cake I need help with, but thought of decorating it with miniature upside down pineapples out of fondant and/or gumpaste. What help I do need is, has anyone made pineapples , re texture, colour, etc. and also, how should I best attach them upside down without them looking like "pineapples on a stick". I am grateful for any insight you can give!
What about making a pineapple shape out of fondant/gumpaste. Take mini marshmallows, snip them, attach to your shape and painting them with food colour to resemble a pineapple. You can make the top leaves coming out of the top of the pineapple from assorted leaf cutters. Those should be gumpaste so they will stand "stiff".
Hope this helps.
Nothing wrong with pineapples on a stick Laurie! you could do a yellow/gold fondant and mark it like a quilt shape with a wheel cutter, paint the grooves a sort of greeny colour then brown dots in the centres of the 'squares'. Leaves as June says. Then stick it on top of a chocolate stick or something to be a little less stick and more like tree. Does any of that make sense?
Makes sense to me. Good idead Katy. I just thought marsmallows would save time depending on how many "pineapples" she had to make.
Thank you both, Katy and June. June, I was confused by the marshmallows until Katy explained without. I may experiment with both. I will need about 20 of them to make the effect I want. What I meant by the "pineapple on a stick" was I wanted it to look like they were just balancing upside down but need something to hold them. I am wondering if just a piece of heavy wire might work too. I am thinking of sticking them in the cherries in the centre of each pineapple ring (why 20). Anyway, thanks again to both of you because this gives me something to work with. I will keep you posted and take pictures!
Well wire or sucker sticks glued into the pineapples with gumpaste glue would work well. If you use wire, then your going to have to wrap it them in floral tape to stop any contamination of the cake. Sucker sticks are cheap.
I have been baking for 27 year but I taught myself cake decorating and been doing 3 D Cake I have a passion of just creating something out of a sheet cake.
