I have a feeling there are going to be a LOT of us that have our moms or grandma's as our inspirations! My great grandma used to make us all fabulous and intricate cakes for our birthdays and holidays, so we all laugh and say we were born with wooden spoons in our mouths! Now I want my grandkids to say "remember those fabulouse intricate cakes Nana used to make for us?"

I love the comment about the wooden spoon Marta lol! I had the pleasure of having my niece assist me with a major project. She's a young chef and it was a proud moment for me!

Hi everyone, I'm Lilly from the UK. I've been decorating for about two years now but I have to say I didn't really have anyone inspire me to start, I just sort of fell into it. I have inspired my son tho, he's 10 and already asking when he can have a go at decorating a cake!

Shana, get a good book as a reference for all of the techniques. The Wilton class books are available at craft stores and not terribly expensive. They are great for learning basic piping and tons of other basic skills, like how to construct a tiered cake. I also love the Confetti Cakes Cookbook and Confetti Cakes for Kids by Elisa Strauss. Some of the techniques are more advanced but, she has pretty good instructions on how to make the cakes in the books. Her recipes are pretty good too. My library had these books. I ended up buying them used on amazon because I was checking them out so often. Edna with Designmeacake.com (she is on this forum too) has awesome you-tube videos as well.

Shana, I am completely self-taught, and I still have a long way to go! But with youtube videos (especially Edna De La Cruz's videos! She is the BEST!), books and practice, you will get there. The most important thing I've learned is that you have to use the right buttercream with the right consistency - once you get good at doing that - you will find decorating a lot easier!

Shana, I agree with Faith as well and please make sure you watch the videos that are placed on this site too. Another great place which I feel is a terrific place to learn and get fantastic recipes which I enjoy are the videos that seriouscakes placed on youtube.

She (seriouscakes) is also a member here on our site including the wonderful Edna! We are so fortunate to have many very talented people on our site who share so willingly. I guess what I'm saying mostly is: Please take the time to Check out our site thoroughly because "Everyone HERE" has contributed and helped me out greatly for my little successes so far!

Remember, it is all about fun!!! So keep trying and have fun.
