Hello. Well, usually my family buys a cake for me for my birthday but not this year. This year I will be making cupcakes for mine and my sister's joint birthday party.

My sister made me mimi-cupcakes last year. Store bought, off brand mix w/ store brand icing (dark chocolate - my least favorite.) It would've been fine, except for the fact that my mom had burned bread in the oven before my sister baked the cupcakes. They tasted like burned garlic bread. Maybe I'll just make my own this year......

I don't know how I missed this group! This is my biggest peeve of all time, not having a beautiful cake given to me for my birthday. On my 25th wedding anniversary, a friend asked me to make a two tiered birthday cake that resembled a wedding cake, only to find out that I was making my own 25th anniversary cake, and that my husband had asked my friend to do the deception. People just don't get it, that as a decorator, I love cakes, and not just my own cakes. I already know what my cakes taste and look  like, I want someone else to take the time and effort to make me a cake. It hasn't happened yet, except when I was a kid and my Mom made me angel food cake (I really wanted a beautifully decorated white cake with all of the goopy icing on it-didn't happen).  The best anyone has ever done so far, is my husband has at least bought a GOOD cake from the best bakery in our area, and not a grocery store cake. And that has only just started in the last three years.

I understand what everyone of you are saying here.  I make it a point to make a beautiful birthday cake for every member of my immediate family - that's my husband, mom, dad, daughters, their husbands and my grandsons.  I get hurt every year because they don't think they can decorate a cake as well as me, so they don't try.  They don't understand it's the thought.  Every year on the weekend of my husband's birthday he goes deer hunting. I decided to go with him this year to visit my family so I made a cake for my husband to share with them. Our birthday's are 4 days a part. My daughter decided she would do something for my birthday also since she wouldn't see me on my actual birthday.  She went to the grocery and bought me an individual brownie decorated with icing - it was terrible.  I suppose there was a thought there, but it hurts because that is not the way I think of them.

Oh I so need to be in this group.  The only cake I have gotten in the last 10 years was one my husband bought for a "surprise" birthday part in our new townhouse on the date of possession.  I was in grubby clothes from cleaning the old place and came to the new one to clean it up.  It stank of smoke, 3 of our youth group were tearing wallpaper off the hallway, we have no furniture and all of a sudden the doorbell starts ringing non-stop and 30 people show up.  I was not amused.  He thought the idea of getting me a cake because I make everyone else's was what I wanted - it was a grocery store ice cream cake that tasted like it was in the back of their freezer for a few years!  Even though we have talked about it many times in 6 years, he still thinks I didn't like the cake so he won't get another one.  No, it was the party part I didn't like :-(  This year I got a creme brulee in a restaurant with a candle in it!
