Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

...what would you do?

I'm making my own cake in a few days and wanted some ideas from you all.  I want to try something I haven't done before.  My family won't mind because they are always my guinea pigs.

Keep in mind, we will be having a family gathering of fewer than 10 so it can't be too big.  Any ideas, pics...?

I just made myself my favorite cake flavor (vanilla) and my favorite icing flavor (dark chocolate) and tried some techniques I hadn't tried before on a 9" round cake. I knew I would love the flavor and I knew that even if the techniques didn't come out perfect, the customer wouldn't mind. :) Happy Birthday, Deah!
Thanks Eileen! I think I'll try something new, too. Hope your vacation was great. I missed seeing you around.

For my best friend a few years ago I made this great torte that was several layers of a cookie crust and then made a chocolate whipped cream filling and a seedless raspberry filling and layered it all.  After being in the fridge awhile the hard layers turned soft with the cream and berries.  I have pictures of mine (which I will have to find), but can give you the recipe and the book picture.  It was a real hit and was about 9" by about 4 or 5" high so perfect for 10 or 12.  It was a huge hit.  I was very happy with it.  Hmmm, maybe I can get my friend to make it for ME next year!
