Hi everyone! I just wanted to introduce myself... My name is Colleen, I live in Northern Calif, stay home mom to 5 kids. Been hobby decorating for 3 years, but thanks to a lot of friends and facebook have been receiving multiple cake orders. I was so happy to find this site! I have been stumped as to what to charge people as I don't want to overcharge since I'm not a "professional" but also want to make sure its worth my time. It also seems as though I'm spending so much on supplies at Michael's... I just can't seem to find a good cake deco store in my area.

Hi everyone, it looks like I'm the oldest in this group. I have three grown children with children of thier own, a total of twelve grandchildren. They keep me quite busy with all thier birthday cakes. Also I babysit the youngest who is just 20 months old. I agree with Colleen Carey, it"s always a problem deciding what to charge customers for decorated cakes. The customers would love the cakes they see on television but do not want to pay for all the supplies you would need to create them.

@ Mrs. Rosalie, so do should we just stand our ground and stick to our rates? I tend to go way to cheap just to keep the business but I lose in the long run. I do so many character cakes and you just can't get those at WalMart, still don't know how to price them well; any suggestions?

Hi shon, I left a comment on your page, but I didn't see it there, so I'll try again. What I first did about pricing a cake was to estimate the price of all the ingredients plus electricity to bake it and the hours it took to decorate it according to how intricate the design was. Then, I ended up just calling around to local bakeries and getting a price for a similar product and charged accordingly. Some of my customers feel that I don't charge enough for all the work done on their cake and they give me a good tip to compensate me. I still feel that I don't charge enough, because I give them a price then do a lot more work on their cake then I promised them.

Hi All, My name is Suzanne and I am new to the SAHM. I was just recently laid off from my job after 8 years. I have 3 children 2 boys 12 and 2 and one girl 1. I have been cake decorating for approx 2 years now and just love it. I have no professional training just from wilton year books and sites like these. I live in Mooresville, NC and feel that being laid off may be a blessing in disguise. I get to stay home with my little ones and spend more time in cake decorating and am trying to get a business started. Miss Tonya I just made my daughters first birthday and was stuck on buttercream filling. I tried something new and mixed a guava paste with creamcheese and filled the cake it was a big hit with my family. You may also if you haven't already sign up for cakecentral.com there are lots of ideas there for decorating as well as recipes. Happy Baking all and look forward to seeing all your ideas.

Hi Everyone. My name is Melissa and I am also new to this site. I am a SAHM to two kids - ages 4 and 19 months. I took up cake decorating nearly 12 months ago as a hobby and have fallen in love with it. I started off doing family cakes and now I am doing friends cakes as well as their family and friends cakes. Its been great. I am hoping that in the future I can take it further and maybe start a business with it. I am looking forward to hearing all of your tips and ideas as well as sharing any that I may have to help. Looking forward to chatting in the future.

Hi Carly
I am in the same boat as you. I have been making cakes since May 2009 and absolutely love it. I have done a few courses now as well as teaching myself things from books and the internet. I had been making cakes for friends and family but now I am finding that I am having their friends and family contact me to make cakes which I thought was great. That then led me to thinking about whether I should start a business from home and wasnt sure if I was up to standard to do that or whether I had been decorating long enough. After chatting with a few on here, they gave me the encouragement as well as some advice on where to start to look into how to start it. They advised me to look into the rules and regulations for eg: whether you are allowed to run a home based cake decorating business, the health regulations and the legalities of it all. From this I am now going to look into it all and go from there. I hope this helps in a little way. Good luck with it all.
