Amateur cake decorators

This is for cake decorators that are just starting off. I see a lot of professionals but I want to know about those that haven't got to that point yet. From the looks of my cakes I still have a long way to go. Can anyone relate.

I took my first Wilton class in October and am now addicted. I love "caking" and snice I lost my job as a cookie decorator with a franchise I now have time to practice. I'm doing my first cakes for sale this weekend. My girlfriend ordered them for her granddaughters birthday and her husband for valentines day. So excited.

I have been a cake decorator for a big supermarket chain for the last 10 years. It was all pretty much the same stuff over and over. I can airbrush and do roses, but I would love to learn to make flowers with gumpaste and fondant. planning on taking classes next month. If anyone has any advice in the meantime, I am open for suggestions. Thanks!!!!!

You would think that I struck gold today...I was so happy when I finally found clear (like water) corn syrup..

I just taught myself how to do a rose!!! I can't believe it I guess I never really took the time to try and learn out to actually make one. I'm not great but I'm working on it.

what recepie are you using janine? I use 125ml water and 35g meriwhite mix them together then add 750g icing sugar ontop of the icing all in one go an mix on slow speed. I find this works perfectly...

I'm using the Wilton one - but i think i'll try something different. is Meriwhite the same as Meringue powder?

I'm not sure what the wilton one is, but I think Meriwhite is the same as meringue powder. it is used instead of egg whites...
