Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

I have an order from a school for sheet cakes to thank their custodian. He is not retiring, being moved to a different building. Flowers are pretty well out of the question, and my husband thinks mops and brooms are a little "too", and I agree. So NOW WHAT???? Swirls, dots, squares? What are your ideas? Any and all ideas will be appreciated. I know this bunch of cakers will come up with the perfect thought! Thanks!

I would do manly colors like blues and grays and maybe do some different sized squares on it. Maybe some overlapping. Or you can even just do a simple cake that is a solid color with nothing else on it except the writing.
How about making a copy of the new building pieced in fondant and placing it in the midde of the cake with a saying something like "good luck at your new location", pipe some nice borders around the cake.
Yes, as the others said, use shades of blue, brown, green etc as 'manly' colors. The suggestions are good. I like Karen's message idea. Geometric shapes (sqs &/or circles, dots) are good. And/or just some fancy lettering.
But.........why are flowers out? Men like flowers too:) Bachelor buttons, daisies; etc in blue, &.or dark red, maroon, mauve etc.
You mentioned a sheet cake so try this: about 2-3" in from the edge make another 'frame' by piping a border. Cuts down how much decorating one must do - especially if it is a 1/2 or full sheet. Yes, you end up w/2 borders:) Actually looks good. Pipe Karen;s message inside the inner border in a really fancy, different font, then fill in that space between the 2 borders w/fondant circles cut with the lg end of a piping tip &/or piped squares in several colors; make a grouping of those circles &/OR some small flowers at 2 of the corners ( such as: top left & bottom right) for some accent/interest.
As a teacher, I've done a lot of cakes for school functions and don't think you could ever go wrong by using the school colors and mascot theme on the cake. Every school has a logo or something that relates to it. We had a strangely shaped letter C and a green dragon head that made cakes customized to our school. Custodians have the most 'thankless' job of all so something like 'Thanks for making the Dragons shine' or 'Thanks for keeping our school running smoothly' etc. would let him know how much his job was appreciated by the school staff.
