Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

I am just starting to charge for cakes but when I broke down my cost t figure out what to charge I charged $20 for an 8" round cake!  I felf so bad since I am so new and my work isn't great!  I have looked on here before for some ideas of pricing and if I took my cost and X3 it would have been a $45 cake!  I need some tips of how to lower my cost or a good price range for someone that is my level.

This website and all the pricing discussions have been very helpful to me- I don't have a business; just friends and family; 99% of my cakes are freebies for presents; BUT I do eventually want to do this for money and I hate when people ask about prices and don't know what to say. I just did a sculpted dog cake for my sister's birthday and really tried to keep track of all hands-on time (including clean-up, baking, making fondant modeling chocolate and ganache, and decorating) and expenses. I ended up putting around $40 into the cake and 10/11 hours. I did a little math based on per hours- $20 an hour sounds fair fro my effort- which would put the cake at around $250; at $15/hr it would be around $200, and at $10 hr/it'd be about $125- if anyone would be willing to look at my photos and give an opinion if the $250 sounded fair I'd appreciate it- (I live in a smaller (35,000 pop.)

I am in the same situation too...just started getting orders....thanks to my facebook page where I post my pictures...I have to keep it under the table so to speak because of laws and red tape...I am doing it more as a hobby than a business but it would be nice to make a little money above the cost of all the ingredients...I am one for great taste and scratch baking so I don't like to skimp on ingredients or buy a lessor product...and I did check out the local bakeries and store backeries just to get a base line price on basic cakes ( 8 & 9 in rounds or squares, sheet cakes, half sheets, and cupcakes and then I went from there as far as what I decorated with......

I just feel bad charging $35-40 when I am just starting out and am not that good yet lol. I guess I am just going to have to suck it up and charge more becasue I am going to kill myself making only $5 for hours of work! If I don't get jobs i don't get jobs....
Hi ladies, I used to feel bad about using boxed cake mixes as my base as well, but not any more. It's less stress full:) I'm curious on one thing though, I'm trying to figure out where I can buy this famous ing' called creme bouquet? I've heard great things about it. I wish to add it to my cake mixes and need to know where to find it. My local cake store doesn't have it, of course! Can any one help me here? thank-you:)
I buy it on line at Kitchen Krafts... http://www.kitchenkrafts.com/product.asp?pn=FL0936-8
