Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

I am in the very beginning stages of trying to organize a cake auction at an art gallery. If I have enough interested cake decorators, this will be the first CakesWeBake.com event. If it goes well, then I will organize them in different art galleries.

So, I still have to gather information to see how to go about this, but the idea would be to bring together a number of cake decorators to my parents' art gallery in Windsor, New York. It is located 20 minutes outside of Binghamton, near the Pennsylvania border. (Yup, making my parents the guinea pigs). This is their gallery.

I'm thinking of doing this during the cooler weather, so no one has to worry about transporting a cake in hot weather.

I'm all ears for suggestions and feedback anyone has about having done something similar. At this point, I don't have any details.

Dang it, I would do it in a heart beat , if i could but i am in south west montana, dang; why cant things like this happen where i am at, LOL, Ever since i got hooked on cake decorating, now all of the sudden Events, contests and a whole bunch of fun cake things have come up
Wow, Hopefully something comes up close to me so i can join in all the Fun ,
Well, my hope for the future is to do Cakes We Bake events all over the U.S., so don't give up on the idea. In the meantime, you should hook up with ICES in your state.
Thansk for the heads up Theresa , I have just finished emailing them to ask a few questions,
12 hr drive for me. If you have anything closer count me in!
That sounds like fun AND it's not terribly far for me - maybe only like 2 hours away. I would love to hear the details!
I am in the midst of negotiating with a gallery, It's an arts and craft gallery . The wedding cake that I will be displaying there is a dummy and will be displayed for 3 months . The cake is in my photos. it's a 3 tier with irises painted around it.
I thik it's a great idea Theresa, good luck but I think you should look at going down the dummy route

The thing I've been trying to figure out is how to make sure all the cakes move. I did speak to someone who said isomalt sugar sculptures hold up very well and that poured porcelain would also work very well for a gallery display. I am completely open minded about suggestions from everyone. I really appreciate your input.
I think it is a great idea! i was just wondering..will all cake be the same flavor? how would you know what the bidder wants? i cant wait for the details..i am in!
Keep me posted Theresa I would love to participate :).
So if I understnad correctly this is not going to be a display but to have real cakes to be purchased by real people to consumn?
How do yhou propose to get enough people to attend and bid to make it worth the decorators time and talent? How would you feel if you put in like 2 days making a "Cake Boss/Duff" type creation, then drove like six hours and no one was there to bid on it?
if i was able to join, and my cake didnt get bid on , then i would just have to come up with a much better design to make people knowice my work on my cakes, buti am still a beginner toboot LOL
Lynne, even without me inviting anyone, my parents fill the gallery up to the brim every time they have an art show. That is not an issue at all.
