Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Good morning ladies and gentlemen!

I love to put questions up here to get all kinds of thoughts from all kinds of decorators!

I have a basement room that is about 10 x 20, and a small room off it that is about 10x10.

Right now those rooms are storage for our children.  I am ready to organize and have an incredible hobby room down there.

Any ideas or suggestions from your experience would be so helpful before I begin!

One concern is that a basement does not get great natural lighting.

I would just love to have everything in one place, easy to get to, and not just store it all but work down there as well!

I am excited to get it going,

Look forward to any ideas of things that have or have not worked for any of you.

I have seen the pictures of shelves on walls and a table in the middle of the room, but I am looking for more specific plans that can make it all very convenient!

My DH is excited to help me!  It will keep everything in one place and I think that would thrill him!

Thanks for any input you can give me!

I have an extra room that I made into my "cake" room. I have shelves on the wall with books and what not. I have alot of character pans and have them hanging on my walls for easy access with directions inside each one.I have all my other cake pans on shelves.  I have a big table with cake dummies on it and then another table with deorating supplies and then a desk for any decorating I need to do. I love my space for just my cake stuff. It makes it nice if I want to go make flowers or just go "play".I know you will enjoy it.

Great stuff!!

Thanks Linda!  I want a cake place like that!

Ooooh - that will be so great for you.  You will also feel a great weight taken off your back that you may not have even known was there.  You have a place for caking that doesn't take up the whole house.  How wonderful!!

I like islands in the middle of the work room.  Doesn't have to be large, but makes it great for working around things.  Lots of drawers and cabinets.  Even if it is a workroom - I still like things behind closed cabinet doors and not on open shelves.  Lots and lots of lighting.

Thanks Dawn, great advice!

My oldest daughter married in January and I have turned her bedroom into a cake work room.  I went to Costco and got the chrome storage shelves and lined the walls with them all the way around.  I then placed an old dining room table and made it a work table with a couple of chairs right in the middle.  The shelves are filled with my pans, supplies, racks for drying gum paste flowers, etc.  Attached are two pictures showing part of my new work room. I use the closet to store larger things that I don't need often.  I love sitting down at the table and having all my supplies right at hand when I am working on gum paste and fondant small work like flowers, figures, etc.

Janet - looks really fun! Isn't it nice having everything right there?

Great ideas!

Thanks so much!!

Now, first thing first...how to get my married daughter to come get all her stuff from that room so I can really have it!

Oh Rochelle... good luck with getting things cleaned out!  Our youngest has been gone for 8 years and all 4 of our chilren still have their things stored here!

This is so great for you! Sounds like so much fun!   I have all my cake stuff in one of our spare bedrooms but it is also a guest room so not much room in there to work.  I have to haul it back and forth... what a pain that is!

I love all the ideas that you are getting!  Good Luck can't wait to see the finished product!

Yes Jeri, I am so looking forward to getting started!

My garage and extra room and basement are all places my grown children have found to leave things!

IT IS TIME!

I should take before and after photos of my basement, just not sure if I want anyone to see the basement as it is now:)

Thanks to EVERYONE for such fun ideas!

I do have to say that I am thrilled that I told a friend what I am doing and I will be doing her daughters wedding cake this summer.  She is going to do a trade with me, cake for 2, possibly, 3 incredible work benches!  They have electrical outlets down the sides, iron tops, and they are beautiful!  So big I am hoping to be able to get them down the stairs!!

I am thrilled!  Pictures will be coming on those~

Cant wait to see!!!

i am so jealous! that rooms is so cool
