Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Today, a bride gave me these doves she wants on her wedding cake (next Sunday the 8th). They are about 10" long, contain feathers, & GLITTER that SHEDS! UGH! I SO don't want these touching the cake or even hovering OVER the cake! Ack! Gross!

She suggested I spray them with hairspray to keep the glitter from falling off! (You're kidding, right???)

I'm wracking my brain how to not glitterize the cake and not make it look tacky!

What would you do?

Gut reaction - I'd say no. I'm curious how others feel.
Sometimes when I was given a topper that was too heavy or tall I'd put it in front of the cake - on the table.
Nana's suggestion is also good.
Usually the top tier of a cake is a 6" R. Show her on a cake pan or styro how it is going to overpower the cake and ruin the whole look?
You are the artist/designer. Give her your honest, artistic opinion that is just won't work as a topper but find a way to incorporate it into the cake table w/o it looking like a lost sheep :)
Thanks everyone, for your feedback. I think I'll put them next to the cake! :)
I'd say no, also. They are not food safe, and trust me, spraying it with hairspray will not guarantee that the glitter will not fall on the cake. I agree with Nana...let her deal with them.
Yep! That would be a "negative" for me, too!
You could spray the birds with food lacquer but that is expensive...here is a link to the brush on kind http://www.ahcakedesign.com/78-8200.html
The spray in a can is kinda pricey http://www.fondantsource.com/coarlasp12oz.html

How about shaking the heck out of it and getting rid of all that tacky glitter? oh...ah...well....maybe not :D You could say they "flew" away.....sorry had to inject a little humor...this request from the bride is kinda silly.

On a more serious note what about putting a little tuile nest under the birds so it will catch the glitter and feathers?
Thanks for everyone's advice! This is what I ended up doing...

That was a great compromise...did the bride love it?
Thanks! Yes, the bride AND the groomzilla LOVED the entire set up! :-)
