Welcome Linda

from across the pond. Checked out your website.  Looking forward to seeing your work.

Hi Everyone! QJ's Butter Clay and Scratch Mix Kits is now a member of CWB!

Ours is a new product, that in short, is sculpting buttercream.  You can do many things with it, as it handles much like fondant and modeling chocolate, but the taste is AMAZING!

Be sure to stop by the Cake Carousel booth at That Takes The Cake Show in Austin, Tx on Feb. 25 & 26 to say hello and check out our new Butter Clay and Sculpting Stand product lines. We will be there doing demo's all weekend. The first 50 people to sign up for our newsletter will receive a special gift! See you there!!

Hey there, Everyone!

My name is Michelle, and I've been doing specialty cakes for almost a year.  I've always loved art, and found that doing custom cakes is like making cake into art. I love every part of baking--except clean-up! Lol.  I am a mom of 5 children (5-12), so I'm pretty busy much of the time, but the great thing is that my entire family helps where they can.  My husband runs all around for me without ever complaining. I am definitely self-taught, and I kind of like learning as I go along.  This is so much fun for me!

thanks linda can i ask one more question lol i know that every area is different but i assume that there are basic things that the environmental health department would expect did you have to do much work?

i had to advise tax people i was going self employed, contact enviromental health to ask what they expected for my business. then when work completed called them back to get the ok and enviromental health certificate. you can then display this and use it for food festivals and farmers markets. take out public liability insurance, then hunt for work.

Hello all, I am Tiffany York and am a stay at home mother of 3 and started making cakes about 2 years ago to save us money with nothing more than just a marshmallow fondant recipe from the Internet and have never been trained or taken a class. I am now doing it as a side business!(legally allowed-to reassure everyone ;) I try me best to make sure every aspect of my cakes are edible and delicious. I only use homemade marshmallow fondant and homemdae buttercream and when cake is not possible I usually turn to rice cereal treats covered in chocolate for stability-such as my XBOX controllers. I feel a cake should not just look amazing but taste incredible as well!

I also enjoy adding other elements like lights, and motors(just getting into that) as well as coloring the inside of my cake to a great effect even after the cake is cut. I am also excited about dabbling into the world of sugar art,I have made elements with poured and basic shaping of the sugar but nothing too extreme. Though I did just get my first pump! yea! I truly enjoy creating edible art that people in my area are not use to being able to get. I hope to eventually turn this into a full blown business.

Welcome Tiffany

I appauld you for being a caker & a Mom too. Don't think I could have done it when my kids were little. I did do cakes, but just for fun. I was way to anal back then. Enjoy, and good luck.

thanks! It is challenging. This past week I managed 5 cakes in one week. I always bake the cakes during the day and if I can frost them too, but I do all my rel work at night after everyone is asleep. I have gotten used to going at least that one night a week or even 2 with no sleep at all.but cake making is so much fun it doesn't bother me at all to lose the sleep!

Yikes

Good for you. Being a busy Mom is work enough. Been there, done that. Mine are all grown. One married, daughter & waiting for grandchildren. Son, just graduated with his Master's. Looking for work, has a great gal, & pretty sure they will marry.

well congrats on that! i just completed my bach's online, couldnt imagine going for a masters!

mine are ages 5,4, and 3. so i have a while before i get that independant time to myself! haha.

Welcome Tiffany!
