Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Hi All, I'm Natasha from Cape Town, South Africa. I dont have any formal training for cake decorating- but i have an active imagination.

I would look at something and say to myself....."I can do that!....that looks easy - but its not always the case i'm sad to say."

I love novelty cakes...and I love it when the little ones would run into the kitchen and they can actually identify the character I made.....that I find to be truly amazing.

I want to try my hand at the spray painting gun......(yes , yes I know...an amateur and she wants a go with the spray painting gun....but hey my motto is...."go big or go home" ....where can I find one without it costing me an arm and a leg on import taxes. I didn't find any at our local shops....please advise.....

Do you have any tried and tested techniques for first time spray painting gun users?

Hi there,

I've never used a spray gun either so I bought DUFFs spray gun set from Michaeals, not sure if you have that there? It is pretty good. I'm happy with it!!

Hi Meera,

Thank you for your feedback. Do you use your spray gun often? Did you find it to be difficult at first?

Michael's here in Canada does sell lots of Duff products, but that is not one of them.  I had thought about going to USA to Michael's & purchasing one, but if I had trouble, was concerned about returning it.

Do you mind terribly telling me how much you paid?

Oops......Just ck'd my local Michael's website, and surprise, surprise....they now sell Duff's airbrush.  Just might ask for it for Christmas???

Hey June!! I live in Toronto, and the micheals stores here were always sold out of the spray!! So i ended up purchasing it in Florida - MUCH MUCH cheaper.  Atleast 1/2 off (they had a sale + using the coupon).  So if you are thinking of getting it, wait till you go to US.  I got it for like $85.

It is pretty good, i've used it several times already.  Good for a beginner for sure.

Thanks for the tip Meera

Maybe going to the States sometime after Christmas

Hi ladies I just want to share my story. I need it an air brush for my son’s gun cake last year and I got one for craft very cheap but then I start reading the instructions and there was warning the brush was made with some kind of chemical that may cost cancer. So I returned that one and order one from tcpglobal.com just make sure that is food safe. It is lots of fun very easy to use.

Hi Ermi - Thanks for the heads up and the word of caution.

Ladies, please tell me, would a spray gun purchased at a craft shop and/or one purchased at a hardware store - be one and the same thing? (Is this a daft question?).

The edible paint that goes into the gun- how is it sold and where would I find these? Please help

Well Natasha that is a very good question.  I had a friend who built model cars, and he had a spray gun/airbrush. Of course he used paint, we would use food colouring.  I deal with a very reputible Art supply store, and I am of a mind to call him and ask the same question.

What type/model did you buy Emi?
