Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

So I went and checked out some of the Duff Goldman products at Michael's yesterday - what they had out.  They were still stocking the shelves and redoing the aisle (thank goodness they still had all the cake circles and bases out - that's what I really needed).  Anyway - my first comment is that the stuff is way expensive - $19.99 for 2 lbs. of colored fondant! And $10.99 for what I think was 2 lbs. of frosting.  The sprays were $4.49.  I did get a can of the silver graffiti spray, but had my daughter buy it and use my 40% off coupon.  I can't attest for the quality, but the prices dos seem a little high. Especially considering you can get 2 lbs. of Satin Ice fondant for under $10 online

I agree Wilton brand tastes horrible. I started using Virgin Ice fondant from the Bulk Barn here in Canada and I love it and so do the people who order my cakes. No more peeling off the fondant before eatin.

I buy my fondant in the 20 lb buckets so don't think I will be looking at Michaels for it. I'd hate to see what 20 lbs of Duff's fondant would cost... and I'd die before I ever use Wilton again. :-)
I havent tried it. Im not sure if I want to pay so much for that fondant when I could buy Massa. I guess at some point I will have to try it. I just think they went overboard with the price
The store that I went to is in a small mall at Valley Parkway and Tulip. It is a good sized store next to a Barnes and Noble book store. I don't know if you took your Wilton classes from this store or their old store that was further down Valley Parkway in a large strip mall. In seven years Escondido has not changed much. When I attended the San Diego Cake Club meeting last evening. We had a discussion about the Duff fondant at Michael's. You can imagine how suprised I was to come home and find it as a topic of discussion on this site. We have friends in Wisconsin and my brother lives in Racine. Also have family in Rockford, Illinois.

Hey Grace! That Michael's is where I took my Wilton classes 7 years ago. :) I'm in Wisconsin now, but it brought back a ton of memories when you mentioned that store. ♥

I was at Michaels in Escondido, Ca. today and saw the Duff products on the shelf. Had not been at Michaels in a couple of weeks and was surprised to see the products. I was shocked to see the fondant at $19.99. I had to look twice because I thought I had read incorrectly. I love the Ace of Cakes but I would make my own fondant before I would pay that much for a small can of Duff's product. I really do not want to pay for a name. I enjoy his show but I also enjoy other shows like Rachel Ray and I don't buy her expensice items either.
Yes, that's the store! Next to the bookstore! Small world. I actually lived in Poway at the time and my best friend talked me into taking the classes so we could make cakes for our daughters' 1st birthdays (they were born 1 day apart). Who knew where it would lead me? :)

Have you ever heard of the San Diego Cake Club before? I have belonged to it for more years than I care to think about but I have learned many techniques from their programs at the meetings. Our club hosts a cake show and competition annually at the La Jolla Village Square Shopping Center in La Jolla. It is across from that large Mormon Temple. You can check out the SD Cake Club web site at sandiegocakeclub.com On this siet click through all of the different features and you will see photos of past shows, etc. We have a great time. Do you have a Sugar Art type of group in your local area? The goal of our group is to share, promote , and educate the sugar arts. We completed our 27th show and competition in March.

Unfortunately there is no group like that where I live. I'm basically in the middle of nowhere in Northern Wisconsin. I'd have to travel about 3 hours in any direction to get to a larger city, so I'm pretty much on my own. That's why I love this site! There's so many ideas, encouragement, comfort and tips!!
I agree with you this is a great site. I have found the Internet a large education for all types of things. When I wonder about something I just type it into Google and they usually list places to help find whatever I am interested in. These sites are wonderful for all of the people who live far from any large city. It gives you all of it right there in your own home. You can deal with it in the daytime or the middle of the night as I sometimes do. I have enjoyed our chat but must get some work done now. No little dust bunny fairies will come in and clean up for me. Till next time, have fun with the sugar.

Well I bought into the hype! I was making a two tier chocolate cake and when I saw he had cake mixes I bought a box. I struggle with the chocolate being moist so I thought - well why not. It was the most amazing chocolate cake ever - moist and not overly rich. So while I did not buy any of the other products (I decorated with wilton buttercream) the cake mix has me!
I tried the Duff Goldman fondant and it was GROSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Way too expensive for something so yucky! I'd rather take the time to make my own MMF! Phewy! >:P
