Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

So I was thinking the other day how it would be nice to have reusable cake dummies to practice decorating techniques on.  A search has turned up a lot of styrofoam dummies, but I'm guessing those are one-shot deals?  Does anyone know if they make like a silicone dummy you can then wash and reuse?  I hate the idea of that much styrofoam heading into a landfill so I can figure out how to make a swag border. Know what I mean?

i buy the styrofoam for practice and have no problems washing off the icing and re-decorating. i bought mine at global sugar arts.
I also use the sytrofoam dummies and have had no problem washing them off and reusing them. (Just an FYI I got an ad from e-bay the morning for set of 6-8-10-12" rounds for $15.25, which is an excellent buy.)
That is an excellent price but how much is shipping...sometimes that is where they get you.

I checked on Ebay and there are a lot of them for sale there - some even cheaper than $15.25, and with free shipping! But I don't know what the quality is.

I once read an idea....bake 2 layers of cake like normal...cool and level it....then put the layers onto a cookie sheet and bake at 250 for another 1 to 2 hours or until rock hard...of course eventually you have to toss them but at least they are biodegradable. I also read that if you make a paper mulch (news paper soaked in water) and then strain the pulp and fill a cake tin, pressing out the water and let them dry, this will create a cake dummy...and biodegradable too!!! You can ice these in royal and them make different decos to enhance your cake portfolio....like 2 layer rounds stacked...bow and dots...snap pic...replace bow with flowers, snap pic, replace dots with scrolls, snap pic...etc.
Sherry ~ that sounds like a good idea! I have sketches that I would like to make into cakes but don't want to waste too much cake just for ha, ha's. I mean I would eat them:) but don't want the added calories. My co-workers love being taste testers but I find that they are getting too much free cake so why place an order.
I just thought of another idea! Sometimes when I have too much cake batter, I make small 6" cakes and freeze them for when we want something different. These small cakes can also be used as practice cakes when something pops up into your head.
Diana - that's what I do too. I have a freezer full of 6" cakes and domes!! I use these when I want to make something small for my family (made one as a "last day of school" treat the other day) - especially when I have left over buttercream as well. I really tend to make too much buttercream because I'm afraid I'm going to run out! LOL

i shrink wrapped mine to make it easier to clean off.
