Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

A friend of mine sent me a list a few weeks ago of cakes she would like in the next few months.  (Pretty much one a week for the next few weeks).  The first one she wanted on Friday (like, day after tomorrow) - but all she said was "Wizard of Oz Cake".  I've messaged her, emailed her, left phone messages on her cell and home phones, but can't reach her.  No details on what flavor, how big, who it's for or their age, etc.  I'm stumped!! How am I supposed to make this cake?  I'm considering just doing what I want to do in straight up vanilla cake with vanilla buttercream, but really wondering if I should just assume she doesn't want it since I can't reach her?

What would you do?

If you have a history of her orders maybe there might be some clues as to her likes/dislikes.  Unless you have something to go on you can't do anything.

Hi Eileen,

It dosen't happen to me often at all but I've been in this position before.  I actually made the order the way I chose as you are thinking of doing in vanilla and buttercream.  I figured if it wasn't picked up, I'd donate it or at least use it for a photo op.  I looked at it as if it was for a paying customer.  I took photos for my portfolio and it was picked up after all.  Even if it hadn't been picked up, I would have been positive about it.  Things like this happen in business and hobbies when you are dealing with other people.  Sometimes folks have emergencies, change their minds, or are embarrassed to cancel.  I find the best thing to do for myself is to use it to my advantage and take photos, donate, sample it out, or use it for a tasting session if one is scheduled near the same time.  I'd rather have a cake ready than not.  Hope this helps!

Thanks Deah and Caran -

Deah - she's gotten a lot of cakes from me in the past in all different flavors, so it's a mixed bag! Yikes.

Caran - that's not a bad idea.  I was looking forward to doing this one as I have a really great idea.  So if she doesn't want it I can always take it to the local homeless shelter and they can enjoy it. :)

I say go for it.  The worse that can happy as you try a new idea and really like it~ you donate it and make a lot of other people happy.  However I don't believe I would do the other cakes she has ordered if she doesn't pick up this one unless you hear from her again!
Well, I finally heard from her and she decided to move the cake to October due to some family issues.  I'd already baked a 10" vanilla and a 6" vanilla, but will just freeze those for something else.  Thanks for your input. :)
I would not do the order, seeing how she is not returning any emails, or phone calls etc,, this is not respectful towards you,, when she shows up how do you know that she might have needed a cake to serve 10 people and you did one to serve 35,,, or vice versa,, this is no way to do an oder with anyone,, do you think she could call a shop and say wizard of oz cake i need in 1 day,, nooooooooooooo, don't give in to it,, when she shows up if she shows up.. just say ,,oh,, i never heard back from you at all , so i figured you didn't need it anymore,, her bad the explain,, well, lets avoid this happening again, and when you would like to place an order with me,, i will need at least 3 to 4 days notice if it is a customized cake,, or just a couple of days notice if it is a basic cake, then i will need the date, the size, the flavor and if anything needs to be written i will need that too, also a contact number incase we have a question for you,, this will need to be picked up by such and such time on this date you needed it by...
