Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Hi everyonee...

So i'm going to be making my first fondant cake in 2 weeks time and I have no clue what brand of fondant to use.  I was thinking of purchasing the Wilton ready fondant, but I read on here that it does not taste good?

Any other brands I can look at for a first timer?  Also I live in Toronto, Ontario so i'm not sure what other brands are available here.

Any help would be great!!!

Mizztry,

Try making it yourself! Seriously. It will taste better than anything you buy. I put a video on here for a very simple fondant that uses only 4 basic, inexpensive ingredients. It works fantastic. I've never had a problem with it. Since you have 2 weeks, you could make a batch, try it out, and if you don't like it you can always order something like Satin Ice or Fondarific from one of the online vendors. (I recommend Satin Ice for flavor - I do buy red and black premade because those intense colors are time-consuming to make.)

Good luck! I look forward to seeing the end result!
Mizztry,

I agree with Eileen that you should try making it yourself. It is much more economical. However, I am not a fan of marshmallow fondant (MMF). The intense colors take time to develop and require lots of gel colors but I always mix my own.

This is the recipe I use - http://www.cakeswebake.com/forum/topics/michele-fosters-fondant-copied
This batch will cover 2 cakes easy and have plenty to spare for decorations. I freeze it, thaw it and refreeze it several times before I use up the whole batch.

Here's Eileen's video

Eileen for some reason I cannot watch the videos on the website...it's just a black screen! Are you able to tell me what these 4 ingredients are? I would like to try it tonight...

Deah thanks for the information tooo :)

You ladies are AWESOME!!!

Meera :)
Eileen, i managed to see the video. Wow it looks so simple...but a bit intimidating! I'm definately going to try it.

Couple of questions...you mentioned postage scale? But any scale would do correct? And i'm assuming powdered sugar is the same as confectioners sugar?
Yes, any scale would work. And yes, powdered sugar is the same as confectioner's sugar. :) Let me know how it goes! It's soooo easy. I whipped up a batch this afteroon in under 15 minutes!

Sounds good Eileen...I will give it a shot!! I'll let you know how it goes!! hehe....

I'm really nervous doing the fondant cake, i've got ZERO experience! Can you recommend any 1st time fondant tutorials??
If you're able to see the videos, we do have demonstrations for covering a cake in fondant in there.
