Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Well ~ I don't know if any of you ever had one of those days where you did not want to hand over a cake but did anyway? :(  I recently asked for a good chocolate cake recipe that I can make from scratch and I can honestly say that the "Hershey's" recipe was very good.  Thank you to those who recommended it.

Anyway, I was asked to make a graduation cake and offered my opinion on decorating it.  Well, they wanted things their way and, of course, of all days, it did not come out to my liking and they weren't happy.  I was running out of icing so I had to make it from scratch and I decided to try something different and wasn't too happy.  Too much air and it was more yellow than white and even tinting it did not help.  Then I free handed the deco in royal icing and that didn't go too well either.  I started yesterday morning at 9:00 a.m. and finished at 10:30 p.m. with other things going wrong as well.  It was an embarrassment for me to hand it over and too late for me to start over.  They have not tasted the cake but I was told that the mother's weren't happy.

I am planning on either handing over the check or returning 1/2 of the money.  I will not even post the cake on here.

Thanks but for me it is. Right now I'm making 50 roses for my grand finale cake tomorrow. And to think ~ I'll be testing a topsy turvy cake.
I would have been much, much happier bring your cake than mine ~ at least yours doesn't look as bad as you think.

Diana, seriously have you seen this cake in my gallery?

it couldn't be as bad as this!!! I posted it larger than life for you LOL

..and I didn't get to see the cake...I am just betting it was not as bad as you think cuz you are way too talented for a complete cake wreck!!!! send it to me on FB and I promise promise not to post it muahahaha!!! no no just kidding!!!

D...Cash the check..and if you are really so inclined return the money minus your costs...I am willing to bet that they ate the cake though!!!!
Diana, I have seen work that you do. You have NOTHING to beat yourself up about. Like everyone has said. We all have bad cake days. I was helping a customer out with a cake on a windy day.....the top blew up and the cake fell out of my hands, turned upside down (still in the box though). the whole thing was smashed. I was able to salvage it and delivered it to the house. How do you think that cake looked?????????
Believe me, your cake looks like a millon bucks.
Oh Patrice - that's my worst nightmare! I have actually had dreams where I trip and fall ON the cake!

Diana - I'm so glad you posted the picture. It's really not all that bad - that's one rockin' Bulldog!! On my Facebook page I actually have an album called "They can't all be rockstars" where I post pictures of cakes that didn't turn out exactly as I hoped they would. And this is on my business site!! I think it's good for my customers to realize I'm still learning and that I have a sense of humor about things.

I hope you got some good sleep last night and that things look brighter this morning. Pick yourself up, dust the powdered sugar off your hands, and get back in the kitchen. :)
Thanks, Eileen. Yes ~ I'm still beating myself over the head with it. Am not doing so well with my flowers either because I'm having such a hard time concentrating. Still have to face my friend tomorrow. I haven't actually spoke with her but her text was that the other mothers were "disappointed". Bad enough she was having a bad day with trying to keep her family from making a scene over other issues and I had to put her thru this on top of it:(
Check first page for photo. It's under one of my replies.

I didn't see the cake, but you know what the say, "you are your own worst critic." Add a bunch of snobs to the mix and it can be hell on earth. Take a deep breath and relax. Did they ask for a refund? If not, I wouldn't offer one without a complaint, it doesn't make sense. If you get a complaint, you already have in your mind to refund part of the money, so then you can do that.

We all have bad days, trust me, I've sure had my share.
Here's my theory: if I worried about being as good as other people, I never would have created either one of my sites. But, I keep learning something new every day. If I allowed my mistakes to stop me, we wouldn't be talking right now. For me, it's everyone sharing and getting to the next stage, whatever that might be. Everyone who decorates well has had lots of disasters. It's all part of the learning process.
Thank you Karen and Theresa ~ I will get over this and am starting to finally get focused on the roses that I'm working on for tomorrow's class. I can't let this get me down and I won't ~ it's a lesson well learned.
