Hi everyone, just joined a few days ago.  Started taking the Wilton courses a few months ago so that I could make cakes for my daughters.  It has grown a little, and I now make cakes for friends and family.  I also work in a Nursing Home, and I bake cakes for my residents.  Their reactions are awesome! 

Looking forward to networking with people who are interested in the same thing as I am, hoping to pick up a few tricks and techniques!!

Phooey on  all that equipment.  If you've got the desire, and the drive to see your dreams become a reality then you've got all the equipment you need hanging off the end of your arms :)

Not surprised about Carlo's bakery. You know, sometimes the bigger you are, the quality is not the same. You see this in large corporate food too. Biggger is not always better. We had a fabulous bakery near where I grew up. OMG legiondary. A Italian family run business. They joined with another larger more corporate bakery, and.......well you guessed it. Taste & quality went right out the window, they wanted to make $$$$$$. The only good thing left was the great Italian bread. The bread maker there made sure of that. Funny, he made the best Scottish baps, ever. My Mom was Scottish, and my first boss was Scottish, and they both swore by them. I imagine he is long gone now. Doesn't matter, they got bought out.

 I actually prefer to watch Ace Of Cakes cause in my humble opinion, Duff, & his crew are much more talanted. And I have actually learned a little bit from that show.  And I tape Cake Boss so I can fast forward through the crappy parts, like when he complains

"I don't know how I'm gonna manage all this/get it done".  Duh, you have 10 million employees, don't think it will be a problem Buddy.   He is a character, and that is what they want for TV.  My son-in-law is a videographer, and has filmed tons of "reality" TV.  ( Kenny vs Spenny  ck it out on Bravo ) And they like the drama, the yelling.  I ,like that, the fly poking the elephant.  Good description, and I am sure so very true.

Me....just show me the cake.  Don't like the Cake Wars, Cupcake Wars, cause can't stand all the negative critisim.  But that is made for TV too. Ratings, ratings, ratings.  Do like Fabulous Cakes tho, lots to learn there.

Being a hobby baker, would love to try so many techniques.  But some of the hardware....Circut,cutters,molds, etc., etc become expensive if you can't right them off or you may never use again.

 Hi ,IM Frieda and iv been doing cakes for family and friends since 1990 and loving every minute of it.I have in the last 2 years worked out of my home (Angelic Cakes & Catering). I do not consider myself a professional .I thank God for my talent and i learn something new every day. i love to  do cakes and pastries and cook or decorate anything with food. i love to make people smile.

Hi Everyone,  I have been making wedding cakes professionally for over 22 years.  This is the second bakery business I have owned.  I grew up in a family restaurant and had a grandmother who baked cakes for many restaurants when I was very young.  I think her influence really helped me be very picky about ingredients and discipline. 

 

I look forward to seeing everyone's work and sharing ideas here!  Cakeworld is a sweet place to be!

Brandy, good for you for making cakes for your residents!    I am a retired RN and hobby caker, and thinking of offering to do just that for our local nursing home. I just joined a week ago,  took a class 35 years ago in Normal, Illinois, buttercream.  After making a few cakes with the  buttercream roses drooping into puddles, I kind of gave up.  Fast forward to a year ago when I discovered GUMPASTE!!  I am self taught, love to make orchids, roses, little animals.  Just got a peonie cutter and plan to practice this week.

As far as having lots of equipment, I agree with JJ.  I was lucky I already had a Kitchen Aid mixer, my hubby bought it years ago at Good Will or somewhere.  It is old but works great.  I use my coupon at Joann's to get the glucose and gum tex and make my own gumpaste.  I make my own marshellow fondant too, and everyone loves it!  YouTube is a godsend, the Food Court videos are amazing.  Of course the professionals need a lot more to do their work efficiently, but if you are just getting started you would be amazed at what you already have around the house or things you can get at the dollar store to use as flower formers.  I just did break down and buy a celboard yesterday at sweetwise here in nashville to help with the peonies, but that is my present for my upcoming birthday July 4.

Hi, My name is Karen. I joined a couple of weeks ago. I have been with cake decorating for about 5 years. I decorated my first cake for m step son about 5 years ago. I made a cut out horse head. But of course I didn't take any pictures of it. But I have made several since then. But I currently stopped working about 2 months ago. I have tried to stay out of the kitchen for the past, alot of years. Being in the kitchen didn't interest me at all. I would barely even eat my own cook'in. But I have been having a great time. I have been diving into the decorating thing since I have been at home. I have 2 daughters that have birthdays in July and I am so excited to try out all my ideas. I love looking at the pictures on this site they are beautiful.

I'm Kandi and I joined last week. I took the Wilton classes last year and since then have been learning everything I can on my own. I have made all kinds of cakes from wedding to birthdays etc. This site rocks! I am enjoying all of your comments and hope I can add some things I have learned as well as learn from all of you! So far I have only added a couple of my cake photos but will add more when I can.

I'm Karen and I also joined a week or so ago as well.  I've been decorating cakes for fun since I was a kid, mainly just for family but in the last year and a half, there have been lots of opportunties to make cakes for celebrations at work.  It's been a great motivator to help stretch my skills and has also made me realize how much I enjoy cake decorating as a creative outlet. 

I've been keeping a blog for about the last 8 months of my cake decorating adventures.

@ JJ, definitely cool that you live close to Carlo's but I love that you're winning the taste tests =)  I don't live in Nanaimo, BC, the home of your favourite bars, but I do live about two hours drive away and Victoria, does a pretty good job of them too.

Love the cakes and passion that I've seen in the photos that have been uploaded.  So much inspiration.

Hello. My name is Majka. I am originally from Slovakia but I live in TN since 2005. I have always enjoy baking cakes, pies but after a few months of baking cupcakes, I have to say - I love it. It is like obsession :)

Funny thing is - I thought I know how to bake-until now.

I learn something new every day. Usually on my own mistakes. :)

Hi All, I joined a few weeks ago.  I have been decorating cakes since 1992.  I entered a lot of competitions and did cakes for friends and family, then started doing it professionally for a while before moving to Kenya where I did it as a hobby again.  I now live in JHB South Africa again and am not really doing much at the moment as I have another job but would like to start doing it professionally again soon.

Since u are Canadian, you might want to ck out another Cake site: Canadian Cake Decorators Guild.  Started locally in Dundas, On., by Lynne of Let Them Eat Cakes.  I took a advanced fondant/gumpaste course with her when this site was just local & called The Cake Spotters Guild.
 Lot of Canadian product on the site, and there are more & more chapters added.  I am not sure if there is a chapter near you.  You would have to ck out the site & see.
