Teneisha, I haven't done it yet but I have been reading about it. It seems that you can use any type of colors - Wilton and Americolor diluted with lemon extract or vodka or the most popular choice of air brush colors.
The Americolor airbrush colors are really nice. I like them for airbrushing. But for hand-painting on my cakes, I like the Wilton colors and the Americolor gel pastes, along with some vodka or peppermint schnopps (sp?). You can use lemon or vanilla extract, but I think that the vodka or schnopps are better because they dry faster.
Just a tip, don't use Everclear with the Americolor gel pastes. They don't mix well and they "clot" in the alcohol. Found that out recently...
I just started doing this and found the Wilton gel pastes mixed with vodka was perfect. What I did was put the vodka in the bottom of a small bowl and then put the color on the side with a toothpick. I dipped the brush in the vodka and then in the paste and it mixed just right.
Will be making the hand painted cake for 14 June. Doubt I'll be doing the painting...it was never my thing...always a mess...I have a colleague that paints...he will do the painting for me...he's pretty good...
Will definitely post pics...it's another wedding...my 5th wedding cake...yipee!!!!
