Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

I need advice from the pros.  I want to buy a stand mixer and am looking at a Sunbeam Mixmaster Heritage Series stand mixer 2346  and the classic Kitchen Aid. I am a new baker but want a machine that will handle making rolled buttercream.  I have read some reviews on both and now am really confused, please help.

thanks,Trisha

Trisha, I actually own both of these.

Kitchen Aid without a doubt!!  I was able to purchase mine (with bowl lifter lever, not tilt head) at Walmart for 139.00.  It only came with a flat beater, so I  then ordered dough hooks and whisk from amazon for an additional 25.00, the draw back is my mixer is amongst the smaller of bowls, but works for me!!!

I love love love my KA and never ever use my Sunbeam anymore.  JMHO

Kitchen Aid!  I have the Classic and the Pro 600 series mixers.  I use the  Pro most often because I generally make large batches.  The Classic I use for smaller jobs.

I've own one of each but different models. They both do well, but I only trust really stuff things (like fondant) in my KA.

I have both the Classic and the Pro 600...Kitchen Aides... LOVE them both and use them both all the time.  If you are doing smaller cakes the classic will be fine.  If you get into wedding cakes and larger batches, you will want the Pro 600 for sure.  It is a work horse!

Thank you ladies, I trust you opinions.  I had the chance to buy the Sunbeam standmixer for 99.00 then get a 50.00 rebate so that was a good deal. But I was not sure how well the Sunbeam would work for the rolled buttercream. It seems a lot of people use the kitchen aid mixer , I have hear some good and some bad about both.

The Sunbeam Mixer bowl turns the opposite direction than the beaters to mix ingredience that seems like it would be a good thing unless the motor that turns the bowl burns out.  Does the bowl turn while mixing on the Kitchen Aid mixer?   The bowl with the Kitchen Aid is deep and narrow , how does everyone like that instead of a wider bowl?

I have the Kitchen Aid Artisan and I love it. I  make double batches of Buttercream icing and Marshmellow fondant with the dough hook and it does not struggle at all. It has worked out so well for me.

Kitchen Aid all the way! I had one of another brand and burned out the motor within a month. The KA motor is strong and handles my buttercream nicely. Good luck in choosing.

No, the bowl does not turn, which is not a factor you need to worry about, and the bowl being deeper rather than wider is so much better.

You will like the Sunbeam.  Like I said, I have it also.  It does fine.  But I don't trust it for tougher jobs.  You will hear the motor struggle.

I have a Cooks stand mixer and love it and it has handled everything I give it so far. Over 2 years.. I als o have a small kitchen aid' but as I said small. I would love a large one but for now I love my Cooks.
