Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

I am about ready to make a sandcastle wedding cake. It will be white cake with pineapple. I plan to make sand out of groundup graham crackers. Any suggestions for any of the decor?

Thanks to all of you who responded and offered ideas. The wedding was yesterday, it was very casual, and they had a beach theme. I thought the cake turned out well and it tasted great. I used two different recipes, white cake with pineapple. I also made a tropical chocolate groom's cake that sits at the left.

Guess what I used for the tower top wall blocks? Let's see who can get the answer!

Amy,
That is a great idea! I appreciate it. Thank you. I will post a picture if it all turns out okay.

Make some chocolate shells....you can get the molds to fill at almost any supply store. You can do any color shell since they come in all different colors.
I like the graham crackers idea and you might want to think about grinding up fine almonds as long as no one has an allergy with nuts (the color is lighter). I make cookies out of fine ground almonds and gosh, a lovely taste and beautiful color.
Beautiful sparkling starfish and glistening blue ocean water? Perhaps a bucket and shovel full of sand? Hand prints together to show a union in the sand - including a heart with their first initials or names inside? I'm trying to think of everything that we did in our beach fun when my husband and I were enjoying our trip. I guess that is it. Hope I gave you somethings to think about. Oh, a stick! That is what we wrote out names and heart out of.
Have fun and I will look forward to seeing your beautiful creation. Thanks for wanting to share your idea in advance!
Thanks for responding and for your ideas. I like them! I did make a topper out of shells, then I added two starfish, one representing each of them. I positioned them on the shell base with one each of the arms touching each other as if they are holding hands. I then had my daughter make me letters with her cricket machine, an L and J, and put one each on the starfish. I have also put some tropical type silk flowers on it too. So I have somewhat of a start. I will post a picture when done.

P.S. My mother lives in Ivins UT. I love that whole area of Southern Utah.

In my album I have a cake that I did a couple years ago with the graham crackers for sand... I put them in the food processer and ground them very fine then after putting them on the table, I drew a heart with their initials in it. We used real seashells in the "sand" And I used some pixie dust to sprinkle over it to make the sand glisten like it does. We used real sand dollars that were sanitized on the cake. I have some molds that I got at Cakes by Sam that are all the seashells and they make the prettiest seashells but they did not want them.. they wanted the real ones.
Thanks Jeri for responding and for your ideas. I looked at your album. You do great work. I liked that western theme cake. That was pretty cool. I am going to be using some fake seashells and I would like to find some chocolate ones or try to make some myself. I have made a topper out of shells and starfish, and put their initials on the starfish. Hopefully all will turn out well. It's for my brother in law so I want to stay in good with the family! I don't want them in the future to be saying, "Remember that sandcastle cake.........!". Anyway, thanks again for responding. I do appreciate it.

Sam I know what you mean about family... they can be your worst critics sometimes. Thanks for the compliments. I love the western themed cakes... I live in a small kind of cowboy town so seems like whenever there is a western themed wedding... I get a call!
I'm wondering if brown sugar could be used for the sand ?
Hi Kathy,
It certainly can, best if mixed in close to equal parts with powdered sugar and granulated sugar. I have done that in the past and it turned out quite well. However, I had just used that sand around the base of the cake for the beach. I did find that ground up graham crackers in the blender do quite nicely as sand, plus that because it will be on the cake itself it will be less sugar intake. So I opted to do the graham crackers this time.

Thank you so much for the information, Sam. I have been wanting to do a beach themed cake for my daughter but didn't know how to approach it. I think graham crackers is a great idea...graham crackers go with anything in my opinion. I love them and think they would add another interesting flavor to the cake. I heard about the brown sugar but didn't know if it would stand alone. Good to know that it shoud be mixed with powdered sugar and granulated sugar. I can't wait to see your cake completed.
When I did the graham crackers the wedding coordinator at the venue was thrilled that I was not using sugar. I guess if anything spills on the sugar it makes a mess of the linens. She was thrilled it was graham crackers because the clean up was so easy. The food processor gets them really fine.
