Has anyone ever used the Wilton 3D Lamb cake to make a horse or unicorn?  I am making a unicorn cake for my niece and loved the idea (found images on google)  but as a beginner need more instruction on how to do this.  If you have alternative ideas, please share!

Hi,

I am actually in the same boat as you, except it is for my daughter. I have been surfing the web trying to find ideas for unicorn cakes as well (she wants a unicorn with a penguin on it's back...IDK, whatever, it's her cake....she is turning 7). That is how I happened upon your post. I frequent CakeCentral when trying to find cake ideas and ran across several peeps that mention the lamb pan as a use for a unicorn cake. I actually even stumbled onto one that stated that you could find the instructions on the wilton website at http://www.wilton.com/idea/Lucky-Birthday-Wishes. Unfortunately there is not a picture with the instructons so I don't know what the finished product should look like...AND since I have not yet followed the instuctions I can't give you any pointers. I will be making this cake the weekend of Feb 6th. I hope this helps, and good luck with your cake. Cheers!!
Yay! I am glad to have someone else in the same boat. Let me know how yours goes. I am doing mine the weekend of February 27th. I am excited to see how they both turn out. Good Luck!
Hello Shallena,

Well the cake got made and it was a success; not saying too much since she is only 7, but I was pleased as well I must say. If you like it and I can give you any pointers, please let me know and I will be happy to help you in any way I can. Just FYI...I baked it in the lamb pan with a pound cake, cut off it's little head (wasn't as messy as it sounds), and replaced it with a horse head I "sculpted" out of Rice Crispy Treats. I do use the word sculpted lightly, I basically squished and pressed until it resembled a horse (had to google image so I would know what one looked like). Good Luck!!

Cheers,
Louise

Louise-
Fabulous job! It turned out great. I never thought to make the head out of rice Crispy treats. I also love how you integrated the penguins for your daughter. My niece doesn't have any other requests past the unicorn so I think I am going to add butterflies. I will be sure to contact you if I need help. I can't wait to get it made.
I use the 3D rubber ducky pan for my horses. Here's one I did for a fair entry.

I just had to pull out the muzzle with extra buttercream, and add the details. I did use fondant for the ears, and Jr. Mints for the eyes.

Lois-What a cute idea! Love your horse! Is it fairly easy to "just add extra buttercream" I have made my lamb and now am supposed to pull out the muzzle with buttercream but I am nervous...any tips?
Louise-how far in advance did you decorate your cake. It is beautiful, but I would have a hard time completing this the day of the party. I have baked my cakes and the party is Saturday. I have also made my fondant flowers and butterflies to stick into place once the cake is frosted.

I decorated te cake the night before. I had to do it after 9:00pm, that is when the girls go to bed. Sorry to admit it, but sometimes having them help is less helpful then they think. It took about 6hrs to complete...that includes time to make and color icing, carve the lamb down, ice the cake and add the decorations. Just fyi I used 2 dowel rods to hold the unicorn in place. It shouldn't take as long if you can premake and color the icing (that is what took the longest I think; as I tryed to match the buttercream to the "horn" which was make of fondant twisted onto a dowel rod). Good luck, I can't wait to see the finished product!!!

Cheers,
Louise

I forgot to say, Louise, that your unicorn looks great! What a great memory you created for your daughter.

Shallena-It was simple to do the muzzle...I just put a glob of stiffish buttercream on , and molded it into the shape I wanted. It stayed great. This particular horse was decorated on a Tuesday, taken to fair on Wednesday afternoon, and it held up through the end of the fair on Sunday. (and got a blue ribbon).
Thank you Lois. It was a challenge to come up with it. When your 6 (soon to be 7) year old says she wants a unicorn cake with a penguin on it's back, it sets you back abit. Last year she wanted a monkey cake, we compromised and since then I have made the requested character in the number of the age she is turning. Thus 7 penguins, last year it was 6 monkeys, next year who knows. I will post the pictures of last years cake (I hope no one minds) so you can see what I am talking about.
