I have not used drinking straws before, I don't think they would be sturdy enough.  I use either hard plastic or wooden dowels.  Put the cake that is going to be on top on a cardboard or plastic separator plate the same size as the cake or a little bigger.  You can cover up the extra with a border.  Place the dowels so they will "steady" the cake or it will lean or sink.
Ive seen some plastic dowels... but they are too long? thats what stumped me?
Run the dowel through the cake....mark it just below the where it meets the top of the cake...remove...cut and replace.

Thankyou.. i shall give it a go. x

Hi Debbie,

You can use wooden or plastic dowels.  Both you can cut to meet your cake height requirement!  I would measure first with the dowel the height you need, mark it and then cut it.  Depending on the size of your 2nd tier make sure you have enough support on the bottom tier to hold the weight of the top!!

Hope these links help:

Thankyou Meera.. i shall take that on board.. and also i'll go and check the links out x
Its Important that you use dowels, because it will support the weight of the top tier and not end up crushing your bottom tear. micheal's & walmart sell thin wooden dowels you ca easily cut. Make sure to also put your top tier on cardboard as well, that way cutting it would be a breeze & adds to the support of the dowels. Hope it helps! :)
Thankyou... i shall give it a go and see what happens .. x
