I'm making a Nemo cake for a friend of mine. I want to have sand around the bottom of each tier, but Im not sure how to attach it to the cake and the board. The cake itself will be covered in fondant. For the sand I was thinking of using brown sugar and granulated sugar mixed together.
Thanks so much for any suggestions!

Stacy - if you want something a little less sweet, you can also use sugar cookie crumbs. Let the cookies sit out unwrapped for a day or two to dry out then put them in a food processor.
And, like Theresa said, you can use royal icing and if you want to make it less obvious, you can tint it light brown using food coloring so it doesn't really show through the crumbs. :)
I haven't been making cakes for very long but ironically, about 70% have had sand (which I have usually been able to recycle as it is only a garnish...) I used brown sugar, caster sugar and ground wheatbix which reduces the sweetness, gives a variety of texture and some sparkle. I have attached it using a light brush of basic home-made glue (tylose & water) to dampen the fondant cake teir or board and then sprinkle the sand on. It keeps it generally in tact allowing a very natural look - however don't be delivering your cake in a windstorm. My advice is to do final preps on site when you set the cake up as things tend to settle and start looking 'old'. Check out the photos on my FB page if you want to have a look at my examples. Will love to hear what you do and how it works out because I just made that up and it seemed ok... ;)

Thanks everyone! Sounds like I have a few different options! I will have to experiment I think :) Maybe I will make some mini cakes. My husband's coworkers love that LOL
Thanks again!
I'm too late but next time think of graham crackers with sugar mixed in.... works fantastic. Not much sugar but a little gives a sparkle and is super easy to clean up.
